Veganism

I had half a roast chicken and its other leg and thigh. The wife ate the other breast. (Chicken's not mine).

Each to their own. I chose to stop eating meat for health reasons. I have seen the benefits since I adopted a whole food, plant based diet. I'm not saying everyone has to eat the same way, but there are definitely benefits from it. I plan my diet reasonably carefully, which a lot of the population don't. Which is a shame as a lot of people have diets which are deficient in many areas. I think nutrition should be taught in schools as most people haven't got a clue. I'm not necessarily talking about you, I'm talking in general.

There is no argument for eating meat apart from it is a preference.

Since stopping eating meat I have done more research into farming practices and I have to say factory farming disgusts me. Most people are rightly horrified if dogs get mistreated, but then they are happy to consume milk, which is the result of horrific practices against cows. Why is the mistreatment of one species wrong but ok against another?

i have to say,
if i did eat meat,
i would go for the fucking lot...
from guinea pigs to dogs,
cats to orangutans and et al,
i'd want to try everything.

meat eaters who distinguish between edible and cute-faced-non-edible confuse me.
i'm of a mind that either you eat meat or you don't.
then again, i'm very simplistic.

Well that's the joke isn't it. People pet their dogs and cats but eat pig and chicken butties. Arbitrary much?

You're one of a dying breed mate. A non meat eater who doesn't fucking shove it down others throats and think that they are saving the world.
Good on you.

I'm interested, what's a typical daily diet for you?

Don't have an answer to that, nor should I. I just choose to not contribute to it.

It's not so much about the solutions, was merely pointing out that this part is what is the main reason for my choice.

Do you feel the treatment of animals beforehand is okay?

in most cases, no, but doesn't mean it should be banned. I was just turning the discussion a different way and asking what would we do if we stopped killing them, we are in a certain position after all.

The sentiment and desire to see the most humane methods possible are admirable and one I share.

there is nothing worse than a non-meat-eater banging on about it.
ismists who spout self-righteously are nothing more than look-at-me-i'm-so-importantists.

It's a thread about veganism.I don't see anyone "banging on" about it outside the thread. I don't really talk about it to people who have no interest in everyday life, I just think there are people on here presenting arguments that meat is essential, which is clearly not true and should be challenged.

Not for a few years. Not worth a wank.
You may have taken the premise of "having a butty" wrong. Most people simply eat them.

However, I simply wanted to know (without going back to the start of the thread) if you're born again veganism was a relatively new thing, which it is. Sort of like a reformed alcoholic or smoker not abiding anyone doing it in their presence.

yes there is, as demonstrated already tonight, repeatedly.

how do you envisage the planet if we stopped killing these animals? What is your view on how civilisation would function and cope, how the economy would cope, how the ecosystem would manage? What do you think the global impact would be if you removed the apex predator from the food chain?
If there was no appetite for it, we'd allow some species to go extinct I'm sure. We may wish to preserve some for who know's what. I think farmer would still be in business, cultivating veg, and the demand would even out. We would still need to fill our bellies.

so killing a species entirely is ok, as long as we don't eat it. Right...Where are the resources coming from to fund keeping alive these animals till they all die?
