Apparently chair of the league let slip they set the most long distance fixtures to be midweek as they beleive if local or nearer games are played on weekends attendances will be bigger

Shirley it would be better to be the other way round? to help fans?

But hey fuck the away fans travelling let them schlep across the country on a Tuesday with no rtn trains or a 4-5 hr drive

Wonder if the prem does similar?

If League 1 & 2 teams wanted to make it easier for their fans to travel midweek (plus increasing local match crowds at weekends) then surely it would make sense to lobby the EFL to revert to North/South leagues as they had in the past. The clubs would save money on travel too. Only a thought.

we have Swansea away on a Tuesday night so yes they do.
And West Ham in the Prem (as well as the cup) last season.
The clubs want to maximise the number of away fans and realise only the hard core travel to away games midweek unless they are within a short distance.

My ERO gave up his ST in the Gwladys because he couldn't get back to London after some of the Sunday games let alone the midweek ones! Liverpool to London, and yer can't get back on a Sunday night, FFS! The folk administering the game and taking the broadcasters' and advertisers' shillings just don't give a FF as far as the fans are concerned.

Maybe the thought process is to maximize weekend games at the expense of midweek games. League 1 and 2 crowds are not great at the best of times so for the sake of 6 or 7 midweek fixtures where a lot of people wouldn’t travel anyway, might make it more appealing at weekend to go when it’s more local.

Take the morecambe v Crawley game yesterday, about 10 away fans in the Crawley end. Move that to a weds night and it’s probably still 10 away fans. Maybe if Crawley we’re away more locally on a sat then there would be considerably more.

Not entirely convinced by the logic, but you would hope there is some method in the madness.
