Ederson Moraes - 2017/18 performances

I'd really appreciate it if the crowd could keep the gasping to a minimum in tight situations late when playing it out from the back! Not helpful! I'm curious to see how he responds after a few fuck ups because their inevitable with our style.

I absolutely love seeing him fly out of the box for a perfectly timed header. I think he's had at least three or four of them this year. I got a kick out of him when he flew out to the sideline to knock the ball out and then grabbed it and started running back to the box before the throw in.

Easier said than done. It's a lot better than this time last year, it will never fully dissipate though.

He was brilliant again tonight, shame he didn't get his clean sheet.
 
He's more composed on the ball than any of our defenders, genuinely think he's a better footballer than Otamendi, Walker and Delph and I don't mean that as an insult to them

I wonder if he'd ever get a chance in the outfield like David James did. Could he play up front.

I must admit that I go semi-mad when goalkeepers catch the ball, stay on their feet and then dive on the ground to waste a bit of time. Funnily enough, I applauded Ederson tonight for that little cameo near the end!!
 
Another clsss performance tonight - puts me at ease on just how comfortable he is playing at the back.

Think we have found a gem with this lad...
 
Outstanding distribution today. Nearly got a hand on the second penalty as well.
 
He's barely put a foot wrong, the goals he has conceded you can't really criticise if you tried.

He's earned his own City chant already.
 
If anyone watched Peter Schmaeical on MNF yesterday everything he talking about Ederson showed today especially about the starting position and being on the front foot
 
I knew from the first pre-season game we had got ourselves a special goalkeeper but fuck me the lads even better than I ever thought possible. If De Bruyne is suspended/injured at any time I’d be tempted to play Ederson in midfield his passing is that good.

Said all last season that we didnt need a keeper that makes save after save. We just needed someone who did the simple stuff well and could do the business when called upon for that one important save per game. Ederson is that keeper. He isnt flinging himself all over, making one world-class save after another, he just has a presence about him which not only gives the defence a level of confidence they didnt have last season but also the fans in the stadium. Everything is just much calmer compared to when Bravo was in net. As for his distribution, well I have never seen anything like it from a keeper.
 
He has a presence about him. He's cold as ice.

And his distribution is unreal. Better than bravo and bravo is supposed to be best around at that.

What I don't understand is how he's gone so under the radar. I hadn't barely heard of him before we went in, and I'm amazed people weren't shouting from the tops about this kid.

His distribution is, to my mind, the key. He's a fantastic keeper in himself, which is brilliant, but his distribution allows us the play the way we do.

When he has the ball, say at a goal kick, basically we have three options: play it short, chip it into midfield or hit it long into the final third. His ability with the ball means there is a very good chance he will hit his target whichever of these three options he takes. His short range passing is so good that - as we saw last night and on Saturday - he can receive the ball again after a short goal kick and keep a passing move going in a way that even facing a high press in numbers, he can combine with the back four to pass through them and get onto the front foot. His mid-range passing is very good, too. It is rare that if he hits a ball out to one of the full backs playing out wide in the middle third that it will not find its target. And his long range passing is unbelievable - he can find one of our strikers at the edge of the opposition with a goal kick (no offsides from goal kicks).

Crucially, this means that however the opposition try to defend against us, we have options to by-pass them. The back four cannot play a high press because we can go over their heads if they do to a forward who is (a) a deadly finisher, and (b) is one-on one with the goalkeeper with no defenders within 20 yards. But if they drop deep, and their forwards are attempting a high press, it means the middle third is basically empty. Also, if the opposition forwards do try to press we can go over them either to midfield (if the back four are sitting deep to avoid a long goal kick) or over their heads if not, or we can play through them, and once through them we are on the front foot. Then again, if the opposition forwards drop deep to make their defence very compact, we can pass from the back, and move them around until we find a way through. So Ederson's range of distribution makes it incredibly difficult for the opposition to defend because they can't be in two places at once. Whatever defensive system they choose to set up, we have options to go over, through or round it.

He is the one player who, to my mind, is absolutely pivotal to the way we play. He's only been here two months, but I fear a long term injury to Ederson more than I do to any other player.

IMO this kid is one of the biggest reasons we are doing well this season, he doesn't panic at all and it means his defenders are much calmer as they can trust him. Nobody is afraid to pass back to him, he always makes the right choices playing the ball out and, which for me is the most surprising, he catches the fucking ball which is usually something continental (and Joe Hart tbf) don't do.
 


Much as I like the guy, he did get bailed out by Stones here.
I hope we don't get to see too much of these situations.
