Suppose Otamendi picks up a knock and Stones' hammy isn't quite right and he has a setback. Faced with Tosin and Mangler as the back two, how do you think we'd fare?

(I'm assuming Kompany isn't fit, which is a fair assumption.)

This is the worst aspect of football club management - ignoring or dismissing the obvious over which you have 100% control. The Mangler has not had a bad game since he came back into the reckoning and had a decent run of games. Evans might have the experience over The Mangler but those who've watched JonnyFE can't come to any other conclusion, setting the Rag element aside, is that he is not very good, and I fail to see how, even in the shortest of terms, he would be an appropriate signing!

I think it's a safe assumption that Pep knows what he's doing better than anyone on here. If Pep rates him, then that's fine by me. I thought Delph was gash tbh and now look at him.

I'm with you and I wouldn't spend 30m on a 30 year old unless he is truly world class AND moves us forward. However, Pep doesn't seem to rate Tosin as for Mangala while he has played solidly would any of us bet our lives on him! I guess a factor people seem to be neglecting is that with this being a world cup year our main two CB's will be away for most if not all of the pre-season and Kompany will be totally done, as you know Belgium and him will beat the hell out of his body. All that being said I can't talk myself into this signing no matter what way I look at it.

The only player of that age I'd plash 30 million on is Bonucci, absolutely top drawer defender. If there is any truth in his unrest at Milan I'd be straight on the blower to his agent.

It beggars belief that some can't see this & think our fantastic start negates our need for more strength in depth.

1-15 is great. 15+ shows the real strength of our squad. So outside of Jesus, Bernardo, Gundogan & Delph, there's an appreciable drop in our quality where the next in line are Kompany, Bravo, Mangler, Danilo & Yaya. After this comes Foden, Diaz, Tosin & Zinchenko.

Hopefully when those who think we've got the strongest squad in history consider the reality, they begin to see why we want Sanchez & JFE if just to get us to the summer & beyond where we can properly strengthen again.

Exactly the point. JFE not good enough but we do need cover. Didn't Pep say something a few weeks ago about making signings for the next 3-5 years? Really want this speculation around him to go away, but not by signing him!

I'm still more worried about the hypothetical scenario where Gundogan, KDB, Dinho and both Silvas get spontaneous ACLs, but to answer your question I'd be a lot happier with Tosin and Mangala than Johnny Fucking Evans.

I'm not keen on the idea of JFE but we have to treat Vinnie as a luxury and not count on him. Tosin looks a good prospect but we need a more experienced option. That said, I Iike the sound of the young guy at Inter - not sure I've seen him play - but he may be a more realistic summer option.

I think Evans would prove to be more useful than many think although it does have the potential to be a huge disaster if he does not settle in quickly: it will be all about how he copes mentally.

It doesn't make the answer Jonny Evans though. It's unjustifiable to spend £30m on a guy to take us to the summer and then want to flog him at half-price (why would he leave?), we'd be stuck with him for 2/3 years. It has to only be players who can challenge and improve the first-team and who we would want to start for the next 2/3 years. We don't need, nor have any room, for more HG players without eating into valuable foreign slots, so if we're going to buy, it needs to be top class and players have to fight and compete for the spots, and the loser gets sold.
