It's scandalous that someone from Upper Volta or wherever is thought by FIFA to be better than someone like Martin Atkinson. Riley has been an utter disaster for the English game.

I vaguely remember Poll maybe(?) saying after a match on BT that the reason why there are no English refs going to the World Cup was that Clattenburg was our elite referee that would have gone, but his decision to quit last season left us with no qualified elite referee with not enough time for others to gain the necessary credentials/experience.

MillionMilesAway. The ref Lee Mason can still change his mind and say if he had seen how bad the tackle was he would have issued a straight red card. However this still does not mitigate the part of the assistant with the yellow flag, and that he didn't tell the ref that it was a dangerous tackle and should be a straight red card.

I agree - I've said that I think the linesman is more at fault than Mason.
 
2 days later and some distance I did have another look.
In a close up and in slowmo the situation is very clear.

But the ref and lino didn't have that.
Considering the quick movement it's quite difficult for a linesman and a ref in normal speed, without a replay.
The linesman and the ref were running, too.
Lino also had to look for the last defender, which was not Bennet.
The ref was back through the half-way line.

IF Bennet wanted to hit Leroy like that he should be banned for 10 matches. But there is no proof.

I can understand without VAR the ref and lino do not have a fair chance to see the detailed impact of the foul at that speed.
The FA now do have the knowledge though and could easily handle the situation post match. Well, they prefer sticking to principles.

SO: we need to have a general understanding that a defender cannot control such a tackle at full pace. The risk for injury is simply too high.
Maybe he wanted to bring him down without hitting his leg, just make him stumble.
If we do not want to see those tackles, we just have to agree - mainly the FA - that this must be a straight red,
only to avoid possible injuries. Then players would have to learn stopping opponents without half killing them. Or trust their keeper.
Or concede because you just haven't been good enough. It's a game.

Problem is, PGMOL and EPL seem to have a view that a lower number of yellow and red cards is a proof for quality refereeing and fair play,
which is nonsense, but nice to show around.
 
I don't know if it is stilling happening in Italy, a few years back, if the ref had a few bad performances, he was suspended for a few weeks, and ask to go through a refresher course of the rules, and had to pass an exam at the end of it, so that he could go back into refereeing. If that happened here we would be without refs because most off them are well be low standard that should be expected. Why the same ref goes from give the right decisions to totally wrong ones in the same game. We will see when the WC starts just how many of our refs will be going to this years WC.
 
St.Pauli support I agree there is no support that he wanted to hurt Leroy, however he could have just pushed him over, even pulled his shirt any of these actions would have resulted in Leroy not being injured. If the World governing body of football wants to clamp down on dangerous tackles like the one on Leroy. They have to come out with a ruling that any player injured by a dangerous tackle, the player committing that foul will be banned until that player returns to 1st team action. There is no if's and no but's you are banned and will stay banned until he returns to action.

Possibly no intent, but the tackle on Diaz? He went on the pitch with the intent to hurt our players, his actions confirmed that.

His studs are up, his intention is 100% clear. He’s gone to hurt Sane and we all know it, even if some prefer to sit on the fence and not actually say it.

If he just wanted to bring him down he would have had greater reach by tripping him with his foot outstretched wrapping it around Sane’s trailing leg. The cnut deserves banning for life.

There is no proof, his word against anyone else's however we all know that if you intend to trip someone you can slide on the ground and clip their ankle, Bennett launched himself through the air, disgustingly reckless.
 
He went in with his left boot-clear intention to stop Leroy. If he'd wanted to make an attempt for the ball he would have used his right from that position.
