VAR (PL introduction 2019)

Which allows them to do what they like with v.a.r.

Notice at the closeup replay 5:30 onwards as you clearly see the keeper push Barry in the back, the WBA no 2, is clearly having his arm held by the Liverpool player, deliberately impeding him.

There is no question that is a foul.

Maybe the game stopped being played on a level field quite some time ago. I think most posters on here believe that some teams get away with more than others. I don't think fans in other countries are under the illusion that their games are above board. But perhaps the VAR will make it harder to persist with double standards in the long run. The competence of the refs is a different problem to getting the right decisions but sometimes the two overlap for sure. IMO football needs to address a number of issues: the age and athleticism of refs are big ones, communicating decisions in real time is another. VAR will never be the answer on its own but it is IMO part of the solution but it needs time and modification and a bit of patience. I might be a hopeless optimist but I think that's better than just chucking it away because it's been a bit iffy once or twice so far. PIGMOL itself is a bit dodgy but that's not going to change because of VAR. In a perfect world we'd disband that and start again tomorrow.

I would use it purely for the 'clear & obvious' decisions, like when a ref misses a deliberate handball (not a ball to hand marginal one, a Thierry Henry style obvious cheat) or a really blatant piece of rugby style holding (not a minor shirtpull which requires a dive, like Salah).

Also pens awarded in real time could be reviewed for dives & violent conduct could be punished.

These things would still occasionally result in mistakes but most would be ok & the game wouldn't be on hold after goals unless there had been an 'obvious' incident.

Then it should also be 3 people reviewing it, not 1.

VAR has to increase the trust of the crowd not undermine it. If it just increases the mistrust, it won't be worth the candle. So for VAR to work well they have to address the limits of its use, and the communication, transparency, and timekeeping for it. There are so many ways they could improve these aspects of football but they move like tortoises. It's hardly for want of money that they don't deal with things.

EXACTLY!

Now you are getting it. One incident is not more important than another. They ALL need reviewing, or non at all.

Get rid of it.

absolutely not, the first incident is the most important after the ball is struck and whatever that offence is you take the appropriate action

out of interest how would you referee that incident without the aid of video??? how would you know which was the first potential foul

So the push in the back on Barry & the foul on the WBA no 2 should have been reviewed first then ?

i'm not saying that at all, that would have to be reviewed to do it correctly to see what incident came first, the ref in this incident only chose to look at the barry incident because A that's all he saw at the time or B he ignored the other potential incidents.

we are chewing it over and over after multiple viewings, the ref only has a short window

on review i feel he got it right, you don't

If you are happy for officials to pick & choose which incidents they care to review, then he got it right.

And he can happlily allow & disallow 100 goals over the season by 'missing' or 'not having time' to review various incidents, & if he fancies earning a few extra quid from a betting syndicate, well of course no way would a ref do that.

And a bunch of you are happy to cheer this in, as well as not being able to celebrate a goal without waiting for their say so.

you need to stop putting words into my mouth mate, i am not saying i am happy for officials to pick and choose, what i am saying in a crowd scene of corner he has to do his level best to see what's going on, you keep forgetting he has one shot in real time to make a call, you/we on the other hand can review it to death, big difference.

No I'm not having that. I spotted the Barry one on BT because I was looking for other incidents, because I am sure that there will be more than one incident needs reviewing in a decent percentage of v.a.r. instances & that these wankers will fuck it up. I haven't seen the right replay since, which shows the full incident that I saw, in closeup, then late last night found the one which I showed you & immediately noticed a blatant offence at the near post.

They don't want to review the other stuff, is why they 'missed it'. And if I was to pull them on it, they would peddle a load of shite about how 'referees see these things differently' or some similar shite, then give Utd a pen for it next week.

Because: it's what they do.

The officials are corrupt and see themselfs as hard done by when so much money is being paid to the players. Put every decision on the big screen and have the scum bags miked up, so we can all hear why they have given the decision, not decide the reason 8 hours later.

in your opinion and that's all it is

The problem with that is, if we are about to get a goal disallowed by Aguero, but see Fellaini elbow Silva in the head in the box before Aguero scores, on the big screen, we are not going to have it, unless that gets reviewed, but then the rags fans see that Fernandinho pulled back Phil Jones by the shirt, before Fellaini elbowed Silva & are screaming about that...

So in Rugby, they end up reviewing every incident, whilst it's on the big screen & yiu can hear them talking about it, but the game stops for ages.

It's my opinion of what might happen.

It's not my 'opinion' that the Liverpool player is fouling West Brom's no 2, it's a fact.

Mike Dean gave us & Stoke penalties for less, as they were supposed to until they started ignoring it again. No rules were changed, it's still a foul.

Which is where we’ll end up with this bollocks unless, as I hope and predict, the fans realise just how badly it will imapct on the game and it’ll get canned due to fan reaction. Every goal will now have an element of doubt, every single one. Was there a pull on a shirt before the ball was played that led to the ball over the top, which led to the cross, that led to the goal, etc, etc. The sense of instant euphoria will be gone. It will kill the game we know stone dead. Everyone looking around, wondering, “has it gone to VAR, hasn’t it?” The game, this fantastic game, complete with with human error, will be finished if we go ahead with VAR. Leave it alone.

I really hate the way the game is run, already, & if I spend next season not being able to celebrate goals because I have to wait for some **** with a feather up his arse to tell me it's ok, I'm not buying a season ticket to do it again. I want to see less of these wankers not more of them.

and johnny evans pulling trent alexander-arnold is also a fact, but again you are on about bent refs and not VAR
