2019-2022 Premier League TV Rights

Sky and BT are actually now paying about the same per game, On the current deal Sky are paying a lot more than BT.

Sky have every first pick at weekends but BT have most second picks so Sky will not have the option on the last day of the season of showing every title winning possible game if teams are close. BT could end up showing the title winners if Sky pick the most likely and it goes to the second mst likely winner that BT can pick. Ditto with relegation. At present Sky have most first and second picks so are all but guaranteed showing all the decisive matches on the last day.

as far as I'm aware, BT have never had final day rights, as it's Sunday games only Sky get picks.

Final day are treated as a normal weekend and you can save any game for the last weekend if you choose. You get no choice over the slot as they are all played at the same KO time. But the pick number of the game you save counts.

BT would also have to chose a team they have not maxed out on picks. There are minimum and maximum times both BT and Sky can pick a team within each package.

Because Sky have so many more games than BT they have much more freedom in reserving teams and picks so that on the last day they can choose any important game.

With a lot fewer games than Sky and so much fewer pick options they would have to keep several big teams with a game not shown back in case they wanted them on the last day, so BT prefer to show key games before the last day so they do not waste big team picks. So they often have no games left on purpose.

But they do - even now - have the option to hold one back for the last Sunday but could end up with a meaningless game at the same time as Sky show a key game.

Which is why they don't do it.

Sunday 4pm games no longer. Now all 4.30pm. Only 30 minutes I grant you but on a Sunday that will make those using trains etc just a little more limited.

Insightful post that, thanks. I hadnt appreciated those subtleties, and esp that BT have in a sense done better with this new deal, even with 10 fewer games, in that they have more 2nd picks out of an average of 4 per weekend than they have under the current deal - that will often times leave them with a potentially tasty match to pick (providing they rotate their choice of clubs as you say).
It was said earlier that one of the yet to be allocated midweek packages had the option to show games Tues/Wed/Fri, but i'm assuming that is wrong - it would only be Tues/Wed wouldnt it, with the Friday matches reserved for a separate package?

It's so much easier in the US, all final day games live on TV and/or Online :D

Friday night games are in with the Monday night games, Sky have that package.

For clarity, these are the packages -

Package A - won by BT 32 matches on Saturdays at 12:30
Package B - won by Sky Sports 32 matches on Saturdays at 17:30
Package C - won by Sky Sports 24 matches on Sundays at 14:00 and eight matches on Saturdays at 19:45
Package D - won by Sky Sports 32 matches on Sundays at 16:30
Package E - won by Sky Sports 24 matches on Mondays at 20:00 or Fridays at 19:30/20:00 and eight matches on Sundays at 14:00
Package F - to be decided 20 matches from one Bank Holiday and one midweek fixture programme
Package G - to be decided 20 matches from two midweek fixture programmes

Wait till you get them maxing out the bank holiday package that they haven't sold yet (largely because it is less valuable to the channels than the PL figured because they have to split their audience by showing several of the 20 games they are buying simultaneously).

As a result on Boxing Day they will want games at 1200 , 1430, 1700, and 1930 or even five slots if they can fit them in and on other days around Christmas to try to screen as many of the 10 games from that round they are buying at separate times,

This will be great for City fans having to travel to Southampton at midnight on Christmas Day to make the KO whoever wins sets for the game.

The only way they will get more money (the reason they haven't sold them yet is likely they are not being offered enough because of having to show too many of these matches at the same time) will be to spread them over a full week for the packs not the holiday one - so ordinary Tuesday/Wednesday mid week matches as we had the other week when everyone played on those two nights.

At a minimum the channels will want to play Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday that week. Maybe Monday or Friday too and be pushing for 6 pm and 8 pm KOs to try to show most of the 10 games in separate slots.

The FA might have to give in to the channels on some of this to get them to pay as much as they want because they just are not worth much to BT or Sky if you have to show all the games you have bought at the same time in just two slots.

This is why CL knock out games are now spread out over weeks to maximise TV slots and the income paid for the rights because they get extra marketing slots denied if they are all shown today and tomorrow.

Yes, but they are from normal weekend rounds.

The two unsopld packs are from the current MIDWEEK slots in a season only - like last week when all PL clubs played on Tuesday or Wednesday.

There were no Monday or Friday games sold for those weeks as teams picked for Monday or Friday would be playing twice in 48 hours otherwise.
