Basel (H) Post Match Thread

The defeat at Shakhtar in similar circumstances didn't hurt us, so hopefully this one won't either.

Laporte was pretty good
Gonna disagree, went walkabouts for the first goal, was lazy in the block for the second goal & first 10 minutes looked like he couldn't kick a football. His passing improved, but defending was lacklustre & he had parts to play in both opposition goals.

Stones seems to get grief, but he was the better of the 2 tonight even if he looked nervous throughout.

Many 1st team players got a well earnd break .good to see the young kids get a run out .Ya Ya should just be allowed to leave with dignity
The game gave Pep a chance to check out the fringe players
People say the performence was poor .If you change so many players in one hit theres always going to be problems

Nice to see Foden and Jesus getting proper game time. Laporte looked really impressive for large parts.

We had half a first team, but unfortunately it was all our best performing players not playing. It makes a difference.

People should remember we were playing Basel in the knockouts of the CL, not some joke side. Anything below our best was always going to cause us problems.

We didn't have any players who were shit, despite what the Debbie downers are saying. However, we definitely had underperforners, which will get exaggerated after a loss

Not overly fussed, but there was a lack of bravery on the ball tonight, a lot of safe passes that served no purpose. Not many staked a claim to play in a league game, Sane aside.

Seriously it was sooooo fucking boring and shit. Players were awful !! not because of the loss but passing the ball all the time like turtles but no chances created this feeling that you can play the whole night but nothing will come!!! should be a reminder a fourt loss against a team who wanted to play. Dèja vu !

A reality check ... otherwise out next round.

btw Toure is a disgrace
Laporte needs to play harder otherwise would be a Stone 2.0
Zinchenko meh ... even if some keep hyping him
Sane Silva Ok
Phoden still a lot to improve
GJ need to play more

You could always watch Everton

Wouldn't want any of the back 4 or Yaya anywhere near a game that mattered after that showing.

Poor tonight, but I'd sooner be poor when 4-0 up from first game. Think Pep will learn a lot from certain players tonight. It is true what they say, you learn a lot more in defeat. Onwards n upwards CTID.

Comments post match are spot on

That was a shambles and has taken the gloss off our double winning season

This place has gone to the dogs..

Proof if ever was needed that to have any chance of winning this fucking thing, our first 11 needs to be on the pitch fit and firing because 90% of the rest of them are average players. Stones days are numbered at city now and I think he knows it, he's had plenty of time to get his shit together, looked like he had turned the corner pre Christmas , sadly that has been a false dawn. Bravo never makes a fkn save, its unreal when you think about it. The 2 youngsters along with sane and Bernard can be exempt from criticism, they rest need a good fkn kick up the arse. I Still see nothing from Jesus to suggest he'll ever scale the heights that Kun has. Disappointing night.

Toure, Danilo, zinchenko all were downright terrible
Yep.
Asside from that - sloppy passes and too slow. but it's matterless as we're through.
Glad to have the unbeaten at home record off our backs though.

MOTM Sane by the length of the Street.
Bernardo was pretty good too (though he faded).
Everyone else OK.

Problem today was that Yaya just isn't quick enough for that position anymore.
No protection for the defence and Stones needs more games.

Maybe Stones needs more games but the facts are last time he played we conceded and lost to Wigan. He was then dropped for 3 games, we won all 3 without conceding.

Yeah frustrating coz we didn't win, bothered though? Nah not really. Basel have an experienced team. Yaya and bravo both 34. Brahim 18. Phil foden 17. Zinchenko 21. Tosin 20. Stonesy and laporte both 23. Gabby 20. Leroy 22. Bernardo 23. Gundy and danilo 26/27. Just look at the ages of them, unheard of in a second round knockout game on Europe.
The future is their for all to see.
Roll on the next round.

We're through so the performance is irrelevant.

Apparently.
