Riyad Mahrez

As an honest question do you see Mahrez displacing either Sane or Sterling from the wings? Personally I do not see it happening, so in my opinion we are most definitely overpaying for someone who we do not really need.

As an honest question back. Do you see Sane and Sterling going injury free and able to play ~ 60 games in one season?

me neither

My point is,we want to be competitive in every competition and that means we need a squad capable of being such. This season was amazing but we fell short occasionally when it came to options and availability. Our squad depth needs to improve and a player like Mahrez does exactly that without the drama some wish to create.

As i said above,if you think you know better than our boss then you need medication.
Agree. At the business end of the CL, we were gassing

The thing is, thats not how things actually do work. Transfers are a scarce market, i.e. there are few elite players, and a lot of teams that want them. When one elite player moves, it doesn't matter really where the source of the money comes from, that becomes the new benchmark (eventually) and future transfers are valued relative to that. Why do you think new transfer records keep getting set? Because sellers have leverage and thats the new price.
Ronaldo moved to Madrid for 80m in 2008. He was an elite player. The market hardly moved for anybody else.

Madrid are replacing Danilo with a better player in Odriozola though. Both Carvajal and Odriozola are in the Spain WC squad, ahead of Bellerin.

At LB they have the world's best fullback in Marcelo and arguably the most latented young LB in Theo.

That is fine all I am trying to highlight is that with our current goal of having 22 potential starters we will have players upset. Obviously the best player deserves to start but the one upset can cause a toxic environment. It is unusual for me to see Pep bloat his squad because in interviews he always said he prefers smaller squads. Moreover at both Barca and Bayern he had a main 11 with some covers in areas but not everywhere like we are about to do so.

remind me again why you guys are losing your shit over what a leicester-based publication with interests in inflating the actual price is saying?

Sane had 1 small injury, apart from that yes I expect both players to be able to play the full season without an injury. We have Bernardo who can cover the right side, Sterling is not injury prone so he can shift to the left and Jesus can be deployed as an emergency insdie forward if need be. People have an obsession about the possibility of injuries but we are already covered on that front. We had Aguero and Jesus injured for extended periods of time and we still managed to walk the league and could have had a better CL campaign if it were not for ridiculous referee decisions.

We will have to agree to disagree. You obviously think Pep and the team are wasting our money, I dont

Very few players never get injured and we are in the nice position of never needing to flog our young players to death

Why will players be upset, do you honestly believe anyone who signs for us will not know the score regarding rotation?

They wont sign without having the full picture prior

In 2009 the average fee for the top ten transfers was £19m and we bought Yaya for £28m. Seems to me like things have moved quite a bit actually

Obviously revenues have exploded, etc. But the record transfers always move the market. I genuinely don't think this is controversial.

Took more than 5 years for Ronaldo's transfer record to be broken by Bale's transfer which was barely anymore than Ronaldo's. If your analysis was true it would've happened far far sooner within one-two years at most and we'd already be having 100m+ players much before 2016/2017.

And us paying 28m for Yaya was less to do with market prices as much as it was us having to pay over the odds to get players.

Similarly to Ronaldo, Ferdinand going for 30m+ back in the start of the millennium had rather little to do with shifting transfer prices through the roof for CBs, or for that matter for GKs with Buffon's big money move back in the 90s.

On top of this, we have new FFP rules now with the 100m net spend cap. There is increasingly very little room for clubs to ask for stupid money if they want to do business.

I'll be very happy if we sign Mahrez but I would have preferred Hazard if choosing between the two.

It’s just that level above I’ve been craving, however that’s not to say Pep can elevate Mahrez to such heights. I think we can all be honest and say we’re yet to get such ilk over the line, it would evolve us forther, on and off the pitch!!

Who cares? Neymar's transfer might take five or ten years to get eclipsed but it's obviously still inflated the market. The point isn't that record transfers cause other record transfers, it's that inflation filters down to lower rungs of the market because the very top end is now higher.

Yes, I know I agree.

Ok this will be my last off topic response as I don’t want to annoy the mods. If he is a starter then two of Sane, Sterling or Bernardo will be benched and after some time they will want to leave and we will sacrifice massive young talents with higher ceilings. I had the same issue with Sanchez being a potential distuption to the squad. If he comes here as a sub then we are really wasting money which we could invest elsewhere and ruininh our academy players. It is unfortunate how the Sancho situation played out as he was the cover that we needed.

Echo this. Obviously I'd like to see Pep give Mahrez a Salah-like transformation, but statistically how likely is that to happen? How many Salahs have we really seen? Let's not forget Pep also repeatedly says that if a player doesn't already have a good degree of talent, then Pep can't perform magic.

So it seems to be it's a bit of a game of probability here where we're kind of relying on Mahrez to have some enormous untapped potential at the age of ~28. And, if history is to go by then the odds don't necessarily seem to be stacked in Mahrez' favor to pull a Salah.

On the flip side, I guess if we can't sign a top player, then what more can City do? Gotta get someone and not leave gaps in the squad.
