There are plenty of "purpose-built" "soccer" stadia in the US -- they just aren't big enough for demand (20-30K) when the WC will want/need 2-3x that. So they go to American/Canadian "football" stadia which will happen to have real grass (in all cases save one in Canada) and the rectangular shape so required by the sport.
Americans find it funny when European football clubs moan about travel times. Believe it or not,there's a pretty well-developed airport/airline infrastructure over here; it's not like everyone will be travelling in fucking stagecoaches.

Yep it's pretty big now. Still not as big as the big 4 sports there but by the time the world cup comes it'll be really big. The stadiums are huge. Canada will absolutely love it and Mexico are just footy crazy alreadyCould be a fantastic world cup. Football's much bigger in the US than it was last time.
