Liverpool thread 2018/19

I remember people flapping about the dippers on here last summer too, maybe even the same people as now. They then finished 25 points behind us.

Honestly, how many of their players would get into our starting XI? Salah? Maybe VVD? That's about it? The 25 points between us are a reflection of City's vastly superior squad and manager and it will take an awful lot more than just a few pieces to make up the deficit.

They're doing what we did last summer in terms of addressing their weaknesses. In some ways it's good as the pressure on them is huge. Klopp has to deliver this season.
Someone was always going to respond. I expected it to be Utd but it looks like its Liverpool.

Bring it on. This spending seems to be financed off the back off last season's Coutinho sale. That means that if LFC end up with a £200m transfer spend they can offset it against revenue from the Coutinho sale. But UEFA review transfer spending on a rolling 3 year basis and the Coutinho sale will in the near future drop out of the equation.

LFC have to either raise future revenues eg by winning the league, or by selling players in subsequent seasons.

They face the same hurdles City did. Fortunately for City. Mancini was successful. Our transfer spending brought immediate rewards. Everything was timed perfectly for us. Fergie left. There was a void we filled it

LFC have a problem: MCFC. There is no void.

My prediction: they'll nearly win the league ;-)

My prediction is they won't win it, but it won't be their fault...it never fucking is.
Wonder if they will have coach welcomes for all heir nearest rivals this coming season?
Sure as hell the Scouse dibble won't do fuck all if they do...they are like the three wise monkeys .

They spent the Coutinho fee on VVD and Keita if I recall

Does anyone remember Klopp saying that he would never spend big money like other teams have done.....you gotta laugh. If the Allison deal goes through he will have spent 400 million pounds already.

Not sure this gap is very meaningful. They are a much stronger unit on paper at least now and will be boosted by the fact they have beaten us 3 times already in 2018. If they get off to a good start and beat us again in October( which given our pathetic record in dipper land is highly likely) we will have a very serious battle on our hands. Call that flapping if you wish.

The only thing that pisses me off about their transfers is that they aren't fucked about or put off constantly by the selling club.
What's the deal? I'm not so sure it's Txiki's fault. It's the same with all of the other top 6 clubs in England.

They did. You can use different measures to review spending though and now football uses financial fair play routine to regulate spending.

UEFA has a 3 year monitoring period and they allow clubs to spread cost of a player over the length of the contract. Hence the Coutinho sale, which really was extraordinary can allow Liverpool to build their amortised player costs but once the Coutinho sale drops out of the 3 year reporting cycle LFC will have to have increased their revenue generation to a point where it matches their increased expenses.

This worked for City because out footballing revenues jumped. Aguero shot us to stardom. And Fergie was gone. Perhaps we were fortunate to operate in an environment where our rivals were at a weak point in their cycle. LFC are up against City at our peak. Perhaps there is space for both of us, because Utd, Chelsea are in trouble

I looked at Guardian Football Finance summary which has the key data for the Premier league clubs in one place and City's revenues are more than £100m greater than Liverpool. This means that LFC can get City style spending past UEFA whilst the Coutinho sale is in the data, but when it drops out they have a revenue shortfall.

I can't quantify it and the data is a year out of date, but the situation is not quite as rosy as LFC fans might like to think because the transfer spending is a bit of an act of faith in Klopp being able to uplift the fortunes of the club.

They are fucked about though. Salah was their 3rd choice for the position because the others turned them down, they wanted Keita but got rejected so had to wait a year.

They were forced to wait 6 months for VVD and pay a world record fee for a defender, £20m more than any other CB.

Here they are doubling the world record for a goalkeeper. No shit they aren't being fucked about, Roma can't believe their luck.

This takes Klopp's gross spending at Liverpool to over £400m without a single trophy.

Klopp - "Other clubs can go out and spend more money and collect top players. I want to do it differently. I would even do it differently if I could spend that money."

Don't forget the last sentence, it's the best bit.

“Other clubs can go out and spend more money and collect top players, yes. But if you bring one player in for £100m or whatever, and he gets injured, then it all goes through the chimney. Do I have to do it differently to that? Actually, I want to do it differently. I would even do it differently if I could spend that money. The day that this is football, I’m not in a job any more.”

Interested to see how good this guy is. He’s nearly 26 but only made 80 odd appearances in league football. Strange.
