Sterling’s contract - three year extension confirmed

Sterling knows that Aguero has another three left, Silva another two years, the likes of Bernardo, Jesus, Sane will hopefully be here for at least five years if not longer, why on earth would he want to go elsewhere unless he wants a challenge of living and playing in another country where the press don't give him shit every day...

Bingo!

Sterling doesn’t come across as someone who will spend his life kissing the badge. He will do what he thinks is best for him. If we don’t pay him someone else will. It’s up to us to get it sorted if we feel he is worth it.

If we don’t then we have to sell him. We can’t piss around too long.

People always make out its the player who makes these demands. He has a management team who do all the agreements. Sterling will say to them, yes I wana stay. They will then say right, leave it with us. They then try and get the most money out of the club as possible. Not just for Raheem but for their company as well. A game of cat and mouse from both the club and his management then proceeds.

Sometimes these deals go quick, sometimes they don't. Fernandinho took 18 months to agree his extension. No abuse aimed at him though as he isn't of any interest to the media.

Its business not personal. Both sides will release good and bad info to the media to try and make each other budge. Its all part of the game. His agent will have said things like he has offers from Madrid, Barca etc and that Raheem wants to talk to them. City will say things like, we are looking at players around Europe and we could sign such and such if Raheem doesnt sign soon.... Its all bravado and bargaining.

Meanwhile its Sterling who gets the sh1t in the press. End of the day its his name. Happens with all big players when they don't sign a new deal quickly.

I bet Sterling isn't enjoying this dragging out but this happens in football.
So when you say "Happens with all big players when they don't sign a new deal quickly" and you say "Fernandinho took 18 months to agree his extension. No abuse aimed at him though as he isn't of any interest to the media" are you saying Ferna isnt a big player ?
Im impressed with you knowledge of how contract negotiations work, have you had personal experience ? (Im not being twatty here, genuine questions cos Im interested) :)

He's worth paying. I criticize him my fair share but I'd love to see how much more we can get out of him. To me is he is still getting better and already very effective.

Just pay the lad what he's asking for ffs! He's one of best and most productive players, not only that he's young and can still improve even more.

Haggling over another 50-100k a week for a key player when we're involved in multi-million pound sponsorships and signings in fucking ludicrous. How shit would it be if Chelsea just come and offer him 250k a week!? He's a fantastic young player and we really need to get this sorted before the agents and media ramp up the pressure.

Bollocks - If we start paying players what they ask for we will soon be in deep shit - clearly you dont own or run a business

Yes he is young but what if he is already at his ceiling performance wise?
We should not be worried about others coming in to "ramp up the pressure" if there is any that is, as that will tell us an awful lot about him would it not?

Pretty sure we could afford it for the best first teamers. We need to stay at the top not operate on a shoestring. No trophies are ever won in the bank. It's not like we're paying him £1 million a day is it, we probably make what he earns from an hour's worth of sponsorship deals.

You're right though, I've never had any interest in running a business, I'm very much from the school of thought that the more money you throw at things the better they generally become.

Even if he has reached his ceiling, that's still one of the top 10 players in the country, and one well worth spending to keep here. Plus almost all players are mercenaries these days, all top clubs are vying with each other to provide the most appealing deal to the best ones. Let's not lose a fantastic player for the sake of what would only amount to about £4 or £5 million a year.

I'm sure the offer on the table is a very generous one but the performance base elements introduced may be prohibitive for some particularly if they can go elsewhere and get it guaranteed. I'm also sure our owners want to be seen as running a smart, sustainable and scaleable business which may mean certain players will leave for more financially lucrative contracts than we can offer.

???? No.

I’m saying the media aren’t bothered about Fernandinho like they are Sterling. I’m a Manchester City fan, why would you ask me if Fernandinho isn’t a big player?

Looking at the unity, camaraderie, success and support he had and was part off last season, you'd think he'd be more than happy to continue progressing his career in that environment. We'll never know, but I wonder if this is having some detrimental affect on the squad that really supported him.
Last season was all about unity and team spirit, this year it seem the success is just a bargaining chip at the wrong time.

He’s going the right way about it on the pitch to put himself in a strong negotiating position.
There will be a compromise I’m sure of it and his best days will be spent here.

Consistently, delivering on the pitch and has had an excellent start to the season. Compromise needs to be sorted and contract signed.

I will wager its 99% agreed and done and like all our contract extension of late, will be carefully staged managed as to when we get told.
