i think that's gone from the game (indirect free kick) you never see the ref with his hand up showing its indirect

Don't be silly, of course it's not gone. As an example, look at a referee whenever a free kick is taken following an offside, his hand is raised to signal that it's indirect.
Granted you won't see many indirect free kicks around the box, but then you never did. The laws haven't changed significantly in terms of what's an indirect free kick offence versus a direct free kick offence.
