Anthony Taylor (of Altrincham)

It’s a very odd/bad appointment on a few levels, but it seems a bit too obvious if someone, somewhere wanted to influence the result. Surely you’d go for a more low-key appointment rather than one that has attracted so much attention before a ball has even been kicked?

This is how I feel too. If there is a stitch-up (and if this really happens regularly, why the hell are we bothering with a rigged sport?), this is too in your face to be subtle - first league game at City since the Chelsea fiasco nearly 2 years ago, 2 years for one of our 'top' refs is ludicrous unless PGMOL were told not to let him near the place for a while.

I reckon even Riley must have enough self-awareness to see how it will look if he behaves like in the Chelsea match.

I'd be interested to hear what Ian Cheeseman makes of this appointment after his comments following Taylor's 'performance' against Chelsea.

Yeah but the coverage the media has given this appointment is going to be telling. Dark arts, whatever it’s called, blatant decisions not being given or given against us, it’ll all be under scrutiny and if indeed Taylor does have tendencies to favour united (I think he’s just shit personally) well he won’t want to miss reffing them in the future. What can he do to ensure he gets them on his rota again? Make it look like he doesn’t favour them on Sunday.

It'll be fine, as I'm sure Sky's team will be Tyler and Neville who will be happy to point out that any flaws.

i bet VAR is the back ground and in the ear of taylor and will control the game for him with sky controling tv cameras ?? just like when they control the replays and offside being shown or highlight a foul when they are after a player, just like gary neville on monday night football on sky highlighting Fernandhino getting away with fouls and cards

I just sent this very quick email below to PGMOL to get something to them before the furore. Incidentally of the 11 games he's done so far this season, he's booked only 44 and no red cards-long let that continue!!

Good Morning,

I just wish to put on record my amazement at the appointment of Anthony Taylor for the Manchester Derby on Sunday. How it can be considered appropriate for a referee, who lives less than 6 miles from Old Trafford and is a well-known Manchester United fan is baffling. He states that he lives in, and supports Altrincham, but that is part of Greater Manchester in the borough of Trafford-I’m sure you see the connection!!

I hope that my fears of some sort of partisanship towards either team on his part are unfounded but having seen how he has recently acted in Manchester City games (Wigan in the FA Cup last year and Chelsea in 2016) he has officiated, I won’t hold my breath.

You have a panel of referees from around the country so why would you, as a respected authority even consider an appointment that allows questions to be asked regarding potential favouritism by an official?

Let us know if you get a reply, although I’m sure it’ll be generic in its content.

When I was a ref in the Northern League I was not supposed to be allowed to ref any of the 4 nearest teams to where I lived. I was given an FA appointment from London to ref a FA Vase game, Crook V South Shields. I rang the FA at London to point out I live in Crook. Their response was "don't tell anyone". Now if you know Crook it is a small town & how they thought this would work was beyond me. So how Taylor can even be appointed to this is questionable.
I also reffed City ladies in the FA Cup in the days of Sven. Rang them to say I was a City fan. Again was told "no one will know".

So did you ref the Crook game then and if so, what was the score ;-)
