The brother-in-law of an underworld "Mr Big" was involved in his assassination, Liverpool crown court has heard.

Paul Massey, 55, was shot dead outside his Salford home, allegedly by Mark Fellows, 38, with the help of co-accused Steven Boyle, 35.

Massey's partner Louise Lydiate is the sister of Stephen Lydiate, who was interviewed as a "person of interest" after the murder in July 2015.

Police were told Mr Lydiate, who is not on trial, was involved, the jury heard.

Mr Lydiate, described as "violent man", was also battered and attacked with acid at the funeral of Mr Massey, the court heard.

Mr Lydiate has never been charged with any offence connected to the murder.

One of those involved in the attack on Mr Lydiate - and a pall bearer at the funeral - was notorious mob fixer John Kinsella, 53, from Liverpool, the jury was told.

Mr Fellows and Mr Boyle are alleged to have murdered Mr Kinsella three years after the murder of Mr Massey.

They both deny the charges.

What a crazy world we live in!!! Go to a funeral and get beaten up and covered in acid..very bizzare

reading about the trial it seems one of the defendants is in a relationship with the mother of one of the cunts who burned those poor children to death in salford last year...

Yeah he spoke to him almost daily on the phone apparently

It's all getting a bit confusing as it seems the defendants moved about a lot. Living in Salford Warrington and other places within a short space of time.

I am going to the nip down and watch this on Thursday.

Love watching trials, went to feed the weather mans, Kevin Webster’s and various murder ones over the years.

I saw Ian Brown give evidence against Talbot.
Been thinking of going to Liverpool myself.

The Michael Le Vell case should never have made court. Such a strange system sometimes.

Mr Boyle denies acting as 'spotter' in alleged murder plot
The QC then moves on to May 5, the day of the Kinsella murder.

Mr Boyle left his home at 5.18am, an hour and 13 minutes earlier than the week before, and the jurors heard that Mr Fellows also set off more than hour earlier than the previous week. Mr Greaney said:

It’s almost like there was a degree of military precision.

The defendant accepted he took a petrol can with him and he was asked why he had not simply filled his car with petrol the night before.
Mr Boyle said he was ‘the worst person in the world’ at making sure his car was filled with fuel. He disagreed he took the petrol can to remove gun residue and his scarf had been torn as part of the same process.

It was suggested to Mr Boyle that this was a tactic of criminals who wanted to clean away gun residue. Mr Boyle replied:

If you say so.

The defendant denied that he was acting as a spotter for a planned murder.

Who Michael Le Vell’s accuser was is common knowledge. It was a very strange case but, above anything, that man was found not guilty. Something didn’t sit right with me from the very start.
