Leicester (League Cup) - Post Match Thread.

I think that's just down to our full backs not quite as good a previous ones pep's had to work with.
All of them lack some real composure at times. Otamendi didn't cover himself with glory last week,
throwing himself around slashing at the ball, trying to clear.

He was awful. And it cost us.

But Pep has evolved imo. He understands the Prem & has adapted. We have even seen him put an extra cb on at the death to see out games. He understands the kitchen sink nature of the league.

His gamble at fullback is out of character with his current way of management imo & it's our biggest weak spot.

We have about 65% possession in every game. In possession, he slides inside and we play with a back 2 or 3.

You can CALL him anything you want, but it doesn’t affect WHERE HE PLAYS for the majority of the games.

I sit 20 yards away from where he plays. He's a fucking fullback who moves into midfield.

Then back to fullback & gets taken to the cleaners in a vsriety of different ways.

You are saying he was in midfield when Leicester scored, or was he at fullback, in which case why are you being so awkward about it ? It makes no sense at all

Everytime I watch Diaz play it tells me he will never become top class as he doesn't release the ball when he should
You may say he's young and still learning, but this happens every time I watch him and he's not learning from his errors

Sterling still does that now too and Sane. The kid is 19, it's a quicker game than kids football, he needs to show he can think, decide and release quicker. Which means consistently playing at a high level to learn, he probably needs to leave and most likely will.

Oh he didn't give the ball away, but it rarely went forward with purpose, it was like his only aim was to not lose possession. Shite floated balls when switching that got cut out. Not cut out for that at all, like I said, not his fault, he doesn't understand the role, or if he does, he's not good enough to play there offensively.

Maybe that was the job he was given. Break up their possession and turn defence into attack by giving the ball to the nearest creative midfielder in our team, rather than try anything too clever himself. If it was, he did it well

Thought Kev and Foden were very very good. The rest not so good

It still amazes me that players dink their penalties or stutter their run up or even just pass it like Madison did.

It's 12 yards out. Pick your spot before you step up, don't change your mind, run up, stay over the ball and put your foot through it before the 'keeper can blink. It's 12 yards for crying out loud.

The likes of Shearer and even Barry had it right.

Have to agree. Two years ago I thought this kid was gonna be a superstar. Wouldn’t be surprised if that performance tonight has made up the club’s mind to let him go if he wants to

He is a midfielder who covers the LB position when we are forced to defend our left wing. On their goal, he was covering the LB position and got caught out. Never argued that, but to suddenly LABEL him as a LB, just because in Pep’s scheme he has converted numerous midfielders into covering the FB positions.

Difficult game made even harder by own our inability to finish chances or play the right pass. We were comical at times in the 2nd half. We need kill off games when we get the chances. Too many times we attack and come all the way back. Walker was awful at times, not sure why, he’s not being pressed for his position. Mahrez was poor, maybe it was revisiting his old team after the incident. Diaz showed really good close control and movement at times, but was far too greedy imo. The easy pass was on a few times and it looked like he was trying too hard.
Foden had a good game again. So many changes that I suppose it’s difficult to get that ‘gel’ effect.
We cannot affford to play like this against a top 6 team, we will get our arses handed to us.
Great support from the travelling blues tonight. Well done.
Onwards.
Burton would be nice, but no doubt it will be Spurs or Chelsea.

Maybe it was, but it wasn't going to Foden or KdB, and when it did it was too slow. It didn't work, I don't want to see him there again, I doubt we will. Much rather see Gundogan there, and I dont rate him in that position either. Ndombele or De Jong would be nice...

Mahrez and Walker did not cover themselves in glory with very poor performances. The later starts worrying me with how poor has been lately. I don't fault Zinchenko at all for goals agains Leicester tonight. He's been asked to invert and relies on cover by our left CB and high block by our right MF. The rest of the players were OK trying to win while playing in the second gear, and they still managed somehow to convert total dominance into 1-1 draw. With regard to John, I know of no CB currently playing in EPL, or anywhere else, who can comfortably play defensive MF in Pep's system.

Ok fair do’s. I agree that putting him in there against a decent high tempo midfield could end badly for us

We’ve got another semi final to look forward to so stop moaning. We went twenty odd years without even getting to a semi.

These are glorious times to be a City fan.

Went to this game last season and I have to say that this season was much better, no lumbering YaYa in mid field, no major injury to Foden due to an overly robust challenge from McGuire, no stupid penalty award by the recently retired dog loving referee.

I thought our general play was good given the team, but the long ball over the left is doing us with both Delf (chelsea) and Zin (today) being exposed, so it needs sorting.

main thought though is I wish I had been there tonight to see super Kevs goal (work, the curse of the city watching classes)
