Crystal Palace (H) Post Match Thread

Good to “see” you mate.

Yesterday was a horrible selection by Pep, he thought we’d be able to get away with it knowing we had big guns on the bench for the second half. Going 3-1 down to the shitty penalty just made it a bridge too far and we panicked.

Shit happens, we move on.

p.s. I agree with your earlier post about Stones/Laporte, said the same yesterday.

Just my opinion but the Stones/Laporte axis has been key to our best performances this season. Need that back asap.

Fernandinho wasn't injured when training ended on Friday and was posting on his social media on Friday night as if he was playing Saturday. Woke up with a knock ?

Possibly but I’d guess Pep just thought it was the best opportunity to give him a complete rest before 2 away games.

As has been said elsewhere, the Stones & Gundo in the same midfield was always likely to be an issue, the minute I saw the teamsheet I was worried.

City won't break the bank in the sense of overpaying for a player. That's laudable in some respects but has a downside best example being Van Dijk. It also applies to Sanchez Fred and Pogba though they might have been bullets dodged. But they illustrate the point.

Watching Mahrez since he signed, it applies to him too!

We need cover for Fernandinho and we need a left back who can stay fit. We got away with it last year but against the very best in Europe we won’t.

If there's one thing to take from that fiasco yesterday, it's that Pep has identified the faults and will rectify them. If not then I may get a little concerned.

Defensively we were poor yesterday. Walker is going through a very bad spell as we all know and was at fault for 2 of the goals. Taking nothing away from a brilliant strike by Townshend, but the ball should have been cleared before Townshend had the opportunity to pull the trigger.

Which two? The ones he gave the free kick (2nd) and penalty (3rd) for? Or were you including the one where he could maybe have got a block in (1st) too?

The lack of a proper summer break for a lot of our players is taking it's toll , Walker and Bernardo look knackered and very leggy.

Which reinforces the point we win and lose as a team

That's the point blue, he won't be average.
That's just wishful thinking. There is no evidence that he can read a game as a top DM does or be capable of beating a man. In fact against Palace he was making the same errors and losing the ball that Kompany made when he was tried as a DM. And there were many on here said the same as you that Kompany would become a great DM. Far better to get a good DM than make the mistake of playing players out of position

As soon as I saw the line up I said to my pals there’ll be trouble mate.

It wasn’t Pep getting it wrong or it not quite working out, it was sheer ‘it’s only Palace at home’ complacency.

I also didn’t see that ‘fuck this we’re not having these ****s take the piss’ mentality of last season. The desire, drive and sheer refusal to not get beat just wasn’t there.

Bizarre considering we were 4 points behind.
Exactly how it seemed to me too.
My thoughts are always to start with the strongest team available and get the game won, then bring on the fringe players.
I think that we showed disrespect to Palace by selecting that line up, they are a well organised and gritty team and have some skilful players.
I also think that it does the rest of the struggling teams a disservice by aiding one team ahead of others.
We are supposed to be challenging for the title and should be at it until we have done so. Dippers are a different proposition to the rags of last season.
Good luck to Palace for the rest of the season.

Because they weren’t fit???
Because they weren’t fit???
De Bruyne playing at say 80-90% of his fitness would still have made our midfield more effective. Foden might well have linked up better with Bernardo too.
Stones and Laporte have a great understanding and should be left to play alongside one another.
Sterling should always play out on the right too. Expecting him to make way for Mahrez is wrong.

On the train home from yesterday's game I was Sat next to Palace fan. His joy and supprise at his team winning, made me think back to the 2007 season. We didn't even score a goal at home after new year, never mind win a game. What I would have given to win just ONE game at that time.
Encountered some Palace fans. They seem a decent lot imo. They were over the moon with the win - fair play to them.
