EFL Cup Spurs v Chelsea 8th Jan

The refs assistant is only to raise the flag if absolutely certain. If he/she isn't they're supposed to raise the flag later and then it goes to VAR
Genuine question here...
Given that VAR is only used when a goal is scored, what happens when a linesman correctly suspects offside but keeps his flag down as it's tight and then a corner is awarded? Can he then tell the ref it was offside and they go back or does the game have to proceed with the attacking side having gained an unfair advantage?

Which is why it should only be brought into play on appeal by the coaches. They get their chance to question the corner, for example, but if they don't and a goal is scored, tough shit.
