Google kill the Chromecast audio

There's a couple of things which piss me right off about this.

1. They were selling them off at $15 each in the US whilst at the same time retailing them for the normal £30 here in the UK. Well fuck off Google. Stop treating your UK (and other non-US) customers with such utter contempt.

And 2. The chromecast audio is the only Google device with either analogue or SPDIF digital output, suitable for connecting your existing audio systems. So you can plug it in to your hifi, or portable Bluetooth speaker or whatever and say to a Google device somewhere "OK Google, play xyz on the lounge hifi" for example.

So why would Google discontinue such a device, when no replacement is in the works? Superficially, it seems to make no sense.

But then the penny drops. Google are hell bent on the take up of as many Google Assistant-enabled devices in as many homes as possible, made by as many manufacturers as possible and the chromecast audio does fit that narrative. Chromecast Audio enables people to use their existing equipment, when Google want you to go out and buy new equipment with Google Assistant built in.

This doesn't help - in fact it's a right pain in the arse - for anyone who has lots of audio equipment already and who doesn't want to replace it. If you have a decent hifi for example, and you want to stream Google Play Music to it, now you can't. It's another big slap in the face from Google. Thanks a bunch!
