Obama did have a lot of things said about him but so did Bill Clinton, G.W. Bush and Trump for that matter. It might go back further than that but I don't recall the often baseless attacks against Bush the elder, Reagan or Carter. It seemed more policy driven then. That being said, it might have happened and I just wasn't old enough to pay attention to it at the time.
It just seems to be how things are done now.
