The ‘empty seats’ myth peddled by Liverpool supporters

Liverpool V Rochdale
FA Cup Third round
January 1996
Att: 28,126
Rochdale took a large following so the dippers must have been sparse.
They only managed 30K against Leeds in the sixth round as well but, I think we need to take the crowds into account of similar games as in '96 football was a bit of a different animal (I've posted this without checking anything else, which I'm going to do now).

3rd round
Liverpool 3rd in Prem v Rochdale 15th division 4 (old money) 28k
Villa 4th in Prem v Gravesend 26k
Rags 1st Prem v Sunderland 1st Division 1 41k
City relegated v Leicester promoted Division 1 19K

6th round
liverpool v Leeds 11th Prem 30k

Semi
Liverpool v Villa at the swamp 39K
Rags v Chelsea 11th in Prem at Villa park 38k

Much as I hate them attendances were shite everywhere at that time.

True. However, some of their more recent attendances don't exactly cover them in glory. 25,605 against Steaua Bucharest in their first Europa League group stage game of the 2010-11 season. If that was City we'd be getting fucking slated for a crowd of that size. New Year's Day 2011 against Bolton in the Premier League and a whopping 35,400 turned up. The "excuse" given for that one is that they wanted Hodgson out so they couldn't even stomach 6 months of Hodgson. Try 35 years of predimonant mediocrity and multiple relegations ffs!

That doesnt stop any Liverpool fan claiming their attendances were always bigger than ours historically and as well as in the present day. Going back to the 80s when United were expanding the swamp I seem to remember Liverpool fans saying they needed to keep pace. I can clearly remember lots of rags laughing with contempt, saying it would be a waste of time because they would never fill it.

Just thought I'd add, last year I was in Liverpool (The evening they played Bayern Munich I think it was in a friendly) and was lost looking for that O2 Academy thing, so thought I'd ask obvious Liverpool fans in scarfs and shirts, match going stuff basically, not a single one had a clue and only one scouse accent, so just thought I'd ask some regular looking Joe out shopping, he knew it in an instant, says it all really.

Don't get me wrong you're both correct but looking at the odd game from years ago dosen't really prove much.

We saw recently in a time when us, rags & dippers play to full houses that a rearranged game at the swamp (bomb) and the dippers (volcano issues) can have big effects on crowds but it dosen't mean they haven't been having big crowds in the modern era.

We however would & are abused almost daily in the press.

Not for one minute am I suggesting we have more fans than either of those 2 clubs as even the most biased of City fans would be off their rocker to claim that. Moreso, that the fans of those clubs who slate City for empty seats, etc, are blind to those same issues that even affect their own club from time to time. In any case, it's usually the armchair fans of those clubs (and other clubs) who bang on about it the most, rather than the match-going fans, which makes them look complete and utter twats. As someone else said, I suppose the armchair wankers who never go to a game have to try that bit harder though as their football supporting existence will never be as fulfilling as that of a match-going fan, regardless of which club they support.

I honestly don't really give a Scooby about their attendances but I do care about the clueless Muppets in their fan base and the media who are purposely feeding out lies about City and our support, there are plenty of recent games where the media could attack the rags, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, but they don't. I can certainly remember swathes of empty seats at Anfield for Europa league matches at Anfield in recent years, where were all those Scouse super fans then.

I wonder how the BBC, Sky, BT justify their anti City stance when the Vogon poets at Liverpool games wave their 'Scouse not English' banners?

Had to pull my son in law after he'd been banging on about empty seats on facebook. Asked him how many times he'd been to anfield, knowing the answer was none. Massive red.

Every "Liverpool fan" should listen to this.....

I don't care what people think about attendances this seems to be a modern almost facebooky argument with a bit of na na na nana thrown in for good measure. If City had 3 fans one of whom was a Dog that wandered by to try to bite the ball I would still support them it's in my blood.
However supporting football is becoming a chore, with vacuous nonsense like the empty seat debates and VAR nonsense, together with sit the fuck down and clap as loud as you can whilst waving the puerile flag we've put on your seat so people on the TV think you're having a grand time, is getting tiresome.

Bang on, Cheesey/Shirley.. Ian Cheeseman covers everything comprehensively but his most important point is the final one; all supporters of all clubs should be up in arms together over ticket pricing/distribution policies (at league, European and international levels) and television timings etc.

I've long since said that many people at the decision-making levels of both football and the media only want us fans there at the grounds as backdrop to their product. When they make their decisions about how much to charge or when to play a game, they couldn't give two hoots about whether fans and families can afford it all; or whether kids may have school the next day when they change a game to Monday night at 8pm; or even the disruption to people's plans that such changes create. Many sections of football administration and the media only tolerate us, the herd, for being that backdrop to their product.

As 'City2' says in his eloquent response to fans who spout their tribal bile about City and 'empty seats'.. 'Ffs, get a life' (well said, sir.. couldn't have put it better myself!) The really important aspects of this whole thing are contained in Ian Cheeseman's brilliant summation. However, as for rival fans laying down their loyalties to work collectively to maybe get something done about these things, well sadly, I'm not going to hold my breath!
