Yep , that old chestnut , return trains and extra time risk.
9 p.m. is the latest return advertised at the moment.

Can anyone with recent experience speculate as to what might happen please.

Only speculating, but if you miss the last train you'll be stuck in London.

From the City website:

Virgin Trains has confirmed it plans to run two additional services to get fans back from Wembley. The trains will depart London Euston at 21:20 and 21:24, providing in excess of 1000 extra seats.

Trains depart London Euston after the game at 19:40, 20:20, 21:00 in addition to the two extra services at 21:20 and 21:24. Should the game go into extra time and penalties, the number of available trains is reduced and fans are warned that boarding cannot be guaranteed.
