Spurs (H) 2nd Leg - Post Match Thread

I haven’t watched a replay but Son looked at least two yards offside and I sit along the edge of the penalty area.
Lino’s don’t put their flags up because they think if a goal is scored it will be reviewed.
Then they win a corner from the offside, get another corner where they scored with a handball.
They review the handball only, yet a blatant offside directly led to the goal.

We were told VAR would erase mistakes and yet at the time we warned that this kind of thing could happen if Lino’s don’t flag for offside when they see it

I'm level with the goal area line. Clear and fuckin' obvious that the guy was offside. Shouldn't have been an issue for the lino. Why, when Son goes for the ball, clearly and obviously interfering with play we don't get an immediate flag as we were getting from the lino on the other side, particularly in the second half, whenever we crept offside! VAR is used selectively in the CL and it clearly and obviously doesn't reflect what actually happened. Haringey benefit from an offside position which should have been flagged and wasn't and then go on to score. We score, don't get flagged, but the goal is chalked off. It's an incredible state of affairs and I can only think that the more Uefa fuck about with VAR it's gonna get worse and not better.

Now reading that Llorente admits it was handball. While I’m not saying any player should go to the ref and say ‘I handballed it’. To add to the video evidence, Llorente’s comments rubber stamp things. No big deal on the continent. Ladies and gentlemen, have UEFA screwed us over ?

I'm still not coming to terms with the media narrative of "Tottenham were fantastic, they proved they truly deserve to be among the elite etc etc"

I thought they were pretty ordinary, scoring 2 goals against us while we were going gung-ho to a suicidal extent then bundling in a scrappy and potentially illegal winner.

We on the other hand had almost double the possession, almost double the amount of shots, and had we not held back at inexplicable moments would have won by about 3 goals.

They basically just did what Chelsea did in 2012... deserved winners and elite performers?

Exactly the bar seems to set higher for us apparently we have to win it while they scrape through on away goals riding their luck with marginal VAR decisions and missed penalties and they have arrived. Disagree with us being gung-ho we were simply playing our normal game you cannot legislate for Laporte who has been rock solid from day one fucking up twice in 5 minutes leading to 2 goals . That's the reality of knock out competitions it narrows the margins and last night was decided on the finest of them.

Well, twenty four hours on and having listened to the debate, watched the videos, cast an ear in the direction of 'learned' pundits, read the scribblings of the RDAHMeedya third rate hacks and having the most perfect knowledge of the LotG among that happy throng of FOCs from CBL3, I have come to an appropriate conclusion - we were screwed over!!

Spurs media bods will now be telling Llorente to stop going round telling journalists that he handballed it.
At the end of the game last night, I turned to the guy next to me and simply said I feel so proud to be a blue and so fortunate to witness such a terrific game. Yes, the result stings, but with a game coming up so soon afterwards, our focus should be forwards, not back imo

His teammates were asking him on camera, while var review was going on, was it handball and you could see on him that it was.

It is a long time since I looked at a referee’s rule book but we am sure the first rule us “the referee’s decision is final”. Clearly this is a rule that lends itself to wisdom, corruption, conscious and unconscious bias. I feel that in these days of high finance, High scrutiny, high speed, high jinks, professional diving, pressurising there is little room for it. Call it unfortunate, unacceptable or call it progress but that is where we are. I agree with the idea of the spirit of the rules, which is essentially how they are decided but I think the only way we can deal with this is carefully crafting them with this criteria in mind. We want good play to be rewarded with goals, we want the dark arts to be punished fairly. The use of technology is the way forward. One of my personal ideas is yellow carding all simulation whether it was a foul or not but at the same time giving pens for a foul even if the attacker doesn’t go to ground. VAR should be used for this, will we then have a Salad toss in the box when the cheating dipper is already on a yellow? Even if he isn’t you can bet he would accumulate enough of them over a season for a ban.
good comment imo plus you should add the 'professional foul' the 'take one for the team offence' which was evident ;last night on KDB and Raheem - these offences should merit a free kick immediately in the 'D' of the opponents' area and only two allowed defend the free kick within the wall in addition to a yellow- this would put an end to 'professional foul play"-

The truth about this is that despite video evidence and Llorente now admitting he handballed it, the short careers of a team of young guys are now disfigured forever.

That old chestnut, what about his two single goal winners? There are many many other moments over the course of the season that will define whether we will win the league.

And probably some over the next 5 games.

Mahrez has not lived up to expectations but the way he is being made a scapegoat by so many is quite pathetic in my opinion.

Team game....CTID

I didn’t say Mahrez is to blame if we don’t win the league, but the two penalty misses were key moments and have had major impacts. I actually think our inability to defend at key times is s bigger problem

He wasn’t offside. In fact it wasn’t even close, Walker the usual culprit played him on by a good two yards.

I’m not having that, they are gutted but these are well trained well drilled professionals and that which does kills makes one stronger. Expect a more focused more determined group of young men next season. Bayern bounced back pretty well from the lucky 1999 rags.

We all felt that pride and our fans were chanting for our team. We as fans (well some of us anyway) aren’t training or focusing on the next game - our players do that. I don’t think my focus will sharpen up until I set off for the game. When I arrive at the stadium I’ll get in the zone.

What did they say about var on the debate last.night? Couldn't bring myself to watch it

We may have beaten Ajax, who knows ? If we got through to the final and playing Barca, we would have been the underdogs, which would have suited us. But a year’s a long time in football - a lot can happen in a year - both good and bad. We have the second youngest team in the Prem, but we also have a layer of players well into their thirties of whom some will play far fewer games.

Burley for one was adamant that had the ref seen the view from behind the goal he would have chalked off the Llorente goal!! Same as me. Had I been reffing and seen it all I would have been over and given the line the mother of all fuckin' bollockings for not flagging the offside that led to Corner I. In that way you avoid the contention of a handball goal being given erroneously!!

Exactly, we could have won, we didn’t, we now need to concentrate on the domestic treble and we go again next season. Young or old our players will be better for the experience, not worst.
