"The only sensible response is of course resistance. To managed tribal conflict, to those who would mobilise their club’s support as a kind of demented online PR army; and from the those of us in the media who feed this, who fall for and exacerbate the hostility....Don’t give in to hate. It leads not only to the dark side, but to a million angry tweets; to a cretinising discourse; to divide and rule; and to a sense of something profoundly lost along the way."

Why did you publish the article then? Cretinising discourse? Nice. You don't even allow City fans to respond to your blog, so much for discourse.

Why don't you give City fans a right of reply on Guardian football?

I’m not sure there should be a term “sport journalism”, to be frank. I think that alone has created these type of sport writers that think their work is on par with real journalists genuinely putting their reputations, careers, and sometimes lives on the line for the very important, potentially world changing stories they report. And even those are few and far between now.

“Sport journalism” further devalues what little actual journalism remains. They’re writing about grown men playing a ****ing game, they’re not Katherine ****ing Glasier.
Don't disagree with you. But covering sport for any media organisation should require the ability to dig out stories and reveal things that no one else knows about. There are still a few Sports reporters who do this. But there is a new generation who do not have these sort of skills. People like Ronay, Glendennning, and Matthew Syed have essentially become well-paid Trolls.

I reckon it goes a little beyond that. I think because much of our support is local and working-class there’s definitely an element of institutional snobbery involved in some quarters.
Personally I think these journos think we’re all fucking thick as well as being of working class stock

In REGARDS TO BAKU...
The writers do not even give a mention to the OTHER FINAL... political problems.. MADRID... BASQUE... CATALAN independence.. Ruling powers .. PRESS PICK AND CHOOSE WHAT MATTERS TO THEM... AND THEIR STORIES.... MAYBE as it has the DARLINGS playing? needs to be just a special event.???? BLESS THEM

Tell him to to publish it on Twitter the shitbag.
That’s the thing though.
Twitter is not a vehicle for true investigative journalism.
MacKenna can gain more notoriety by insinuation and bluster and not having to produce a shred of evidence while all the time claiming victim, that City are stopping his story getting out.

I know this stuff is lapped up but I despair of the current generation that get their news this lazy way.
They like to be spoon fed what they want to hear.

What’s happened your keyboard.
I think the caps lock is on the blink.

I think our wonderful fans going on the offensive this week has been amazing. Not the ones hurling abuse as that just plays into their hands, I mean the ones with facts, truths and legitimate counter arguments

This will be what sends them squirming back under their rocks

I think my dad (whilst sharing your wider cynicism) would disagree. He's definitely moved up the social ladder in the last 84 years. There is definitely a glass ceiling, though.

Was more tongue in cheek, pal..

If there’s lessons I’ve learned from my parents, who are my hero’s, it’s that you fight barriers and ignorance, empower those around you and have an unconditional positive regard for everyone, regardless of background..... I’m pretty sure the ‘toffs’ at Durham learnt a lesson or two (:

I disagree, I like the rabid written assaults the Journo's get, whilst they are then being condescending looking down their noses making pithy remarks, basking in their self righteous holier than though smugness, along come the erudite posters such as Rabin, Prestwich et al who proceed to deliver clinical devastating blows, like Tommy Hearns and that famous overhand right shot that sent Robero Duran to Narnia. Glorious scenes.

Its been entertaining that's for sure. The **** from the NYT shut the fuck up when I asked where his article was about that **** Shinawatra. He questioned us over our support for human rights abusing regimes and if any of you were about and remember the days when the Thai **** took over I was totally against him for his HR record. I was waiting to give it him double barrelled over my stance as I gave my ST up at that time and I am not having some no mark hack ever question my morality.
