I’ve been in this thread too long today, but I have to say the kind of rhetoric being pedaled both in the UK and the US at the moment is frightening.
It is becoming the new norm for politics.
Did people always like being lied to or is this a new phenomenon.

I think people are so firmly entrenched in their views now that they’ll buy any old bullshit as long as they think it validates their opinion. Whatever happens from here, this country is deeply fragmented and fucked for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately very true.

No. People used to object to being lied to. However a significant number of people in this country have become so blinded by a hatred of the EU and a fabricated belief that leaving on the 31st will make them richer on the following day means they will take literally anything to achieve that ambition... to the point where they will not listen to any debate - even something that may be reflecting their position.

The next stage will be project fear in action and how much of the fear people will put up with before any views are changed.

It could be that it will all blow over because “business always adapts”, but my feeling is that we are in for a bumpy ride for the foreseeable future.

We’ve had multiple people knocking on our door for food/gas/electric in the past few months due to UB suspensions. (We live in a vicarage). My guess is that number won’t drop in the short term.

Yes and No, the real underlying factor is that the relevant elites knows they currently could smash any actual resistance in the ground. It's not so much a lack of will to fight on the left, rather the unbridled power of the elite got too far. Look at what "wealthy interrests" have done with the media and the social/psychological impact of it. Understand that they know full well that they won't continue this trend of the elite ever increasing it's wealth and hence power withought some resistance eventually to it, they plan to smash it down when it comes. You should know where this "trend" in the US and the UK is going if youre not completly naive atleast, imho.

It will absolutely be a reworked version and with days to go, the no deal side of the house will have to decide just how much no deal they really are or they will have to come out of the closet and tell everyone they have just been anti brexit all along and have also been lying through their teeth.

Boris might be a **** but he isn't a fool and is playing this out superbly imo.
Indeed he is - for all the desire of the detractors to demean anything about him - this is being done very astutely

No-Deal is also double-edged, which is clever and - for people like me that hate the idea of an unfettered backstop - quite scary

If he can get through next week and prorogue parliament then he can look to the key EU meeting in October and seek to secure something that places limits on the backstop which he can then take back to a vote when parliament resumes. So the EU are facing that edge of the sword and we will see if they will move or not - for those at the back, should that occur, that will be when the EU would be facing the prospect of a No-Deal

Then it is the UK parliaments turn to face the other edge - they must choose to either accept May's deal if the EU offer no concessions or a revised deal based on what the EU do offer against No-Deal - for those at the back, should that occur, that will be when the UK parliament would be facing the prospect of a No-Deal - that is how these things work

He will have certainly focussed some minds and shot some foxes - but fuck it is quite clever - and that is why those against the UK Leaving the EU are in a state of angst. I saw Hillary Benn om Newsnight - his bluster totally exposed

Still - got to get through next week yet

Do you honestly think Spain, which is probably the home of most expats, is suddenly, some time after Brexit,
going to immediately rescind reciprocation? Why, just to be awkward cunts? What do they gain from it?
The same goes for other areas of the EU, what is to be gained?
There has been some proper fanciful bollocks spouted in the face of calm and reasoned posts from yourself and Blueinsa - desperate stuff

I'd imagine the EU would rise above such pettiness in order to protect its citizens by establishing a reciprocal agreement - unless you are implying they are in some way a malevolent organisation.
Yep - such utter tripe posted on this subject

There are 3 times the number of EU27 citizens living on the UK than UK citizens living across the EU27 - just pure nonsense being stirred up

Where is that gif from blazing saddles about the fella threatening to shoot himself

You would think some Remainers are getting a little desperate due to recent events

Well that sounds great.
If you believe that’s the answer it should have been discussed before now but we know why it hasn’t.
I think we agree about the mess that has been made.
I don’t believe the technology is there which is another thing delaying the timeline.

But ultimately going forward l don’t share your optimism regarding how discussions with your present government would pan out even if they were to happen.

There is serious damage being done to Irish British relations at the moment and I sincerely hope nothing is done to make it worse.
Your present government are untrustworthy. They’d sell their own down the river to get what they want.
But it seems that you agree that what I posted is a sensible proposal and would address the Irish border issue?

So - yes it is just down to politicians being:

1. previously incompetent - May's regime - and not able to grasp what seems straight-forward

2. clever to this point - the EU team - but now could a good time to 'cash-in'

3. Focussed/ruthless/determined to bring this to an end - Boris and his advisors

If the arrangements I set out are workable - they are - and if someone like me can think of them - then I am sure that all these clever people advising Johnson and the EU can also think of them. Just political will needed and there is nothing like the risk of a walk-away to focus the minds IMO

Cute thing is - that what I propose allows all the EU, Ireland and the UK to save face/claim success

So basically he’s taking his own people for a ride?
You know this, but it’s alright?
I get it. But is this really the way you want to go.
Not his own people - they voted to Leave the EU

He seems determined to bring this to an end and thwart the continuous machinations of the Remain dominated HoP.

I suspect that he has a lot of backing across the UK - and would win a GE

Nope. There'll be no deal with the EU so it'll be up to individual member states.
