And it was Foot interestingly, not the 'right' that objected. I've posted this clip before, just to make the point about the much higher quality of (both sides of) debate back then.
Foot was right in everything he said, Heath secretly commited us to eventual full integration as the price of entry - he felt there was nothing could be done to revive our economy, control union power or defeat the IRA and saw a federal future as part of the EU as a possible solution.

Nothing to do with the fact that the Tories are now way ahead in the opinion polls and they fear a backlash from Leave voters? ;)
I think it’s more because it would be difficult to force Johnson out in time, there’s obviously disagreement over who would be interim PM, and a failed attempt to become PM might look bad for Corbyn once the election is eventually called.

Probably as much to do with the fact that once they get rid of no deal they will tear each others throats out.

You threatened to "don khaki, pick up a rifle and head for the front lines" if you don't get your way on Brexit. We will protest your hard right politics of hate until we win.

For senior political figures to encourage street protests makes me wonder — are there any limits they won’t go to in order to stop Brexit?

Yes, the thing with polls is they don’t tell you whats happening in individual seats, It’s highly unlikely they would get anywhere near the 13 seats they got in Scotland no matter what the polls say. The triple whammy of Brexit, Johnson and Davidson they will be lucky to get 3.
They will have seats they have taken from the Liberals recently a few Brexit party votes will see them swing back. So 34% doesn’t translate to seats. Its 3% down so if they lose seats to SNP and liberals they would need to be the main beneficiary of lost labour seats. I have no idea how many labour seats Conservatives were in second place and were winnable.
There will be no working majority either way so it will depend on those best placed to make deals and the tories only have the 10 or so DUP seats to count on.
You're assuming the DUP will be as influential after the next GE.

Given all three were reversed as part of our membership of the EEC/EU, then maybe Heath had a point.
