Rather than die in a ditch it looks like Johnson has decided the DUP can be dead in a ditch - aside from that being powerful negative symbolism in Ulster though in keeping with Johnsons dreadful language over Brexit it also means the loss of another 10 supporting votes.................how is this a winning strategy?

No problem really. He gets a deal that keeps the UK in the CU and Labour supports it, so he doesn't need either the ERG or the DUP.

Only downside is the heart problems and blood pressure of the Tory members who made him PM, and the ERG's rage and the consequent self-destructiion of the Tory party. Well, when I say downside...

I'll answer one and three. She's burning in hell but even with her sins she's disgusted by Brexit.

Ireland's Commissioner Phil Hogan gets the EU trade portfolio. Means he'll be the face of Brussels in negotiating any future trade deal with the UK. Dublin will be delighted.
Yep. Posted on here a few days ago that he was likely to get it. Went for a few pints with him today, know him from my political days, don't agree with it but he's going fucking militant in the case of no deal. Not good news for you lot as he'll push you towards whatever the u.s. are willing to offer you.

I made a simple point that it is undemocratic for the eu president and the commission not to be elected by the public, if we can elect them we can remove them. Not sure why thats controversial, its Democracy, but it seems that any criticism of how the eu is run is frowned upon by its supporters. So I shall make this my final post on the subject, as neither of us will be changing our minds, and I've not got the time for this, busy day.

As for the situation in this country, of course there should be an election, but we all know who's stopping that.
You elect the people that choose them, just as you elect the people that choose the PM and his cabinet.

That makes sense and sounds like a good idea.
However, I don't think it would work because I think people would be inclined to vote for the person put forward by their country.
Could you see a French or German candidate being voted for by people in this country against an English candidate?
That problem would be the same in all countries and we would always end up with a German president as they have the largest population.
I think you'd be fairly surprised. We'd end up with a president from a smaller country more times than not imo.

Can't blame Ireland for that. Brexit is an act of extreme national selfishness. Ireland are our good friends and closest neighbours, culturally, and yet their interests never seem to have been entered into any leading politician's calculations, when evaluating the pluses and minuses of Brexit.

Don't our friends and neighbours, the Irish, deserve a bit more respect than that? .

What powers would you give them? I'm not in favour of it tbh, I've read my Plato.

It would depend on the checks and balances available to counteract the executive powers. I wouldn't want an elective dictator, but I wouldn't want a puppet either.

Perhaps it could be put to a referendum :))

How does prorogation work? How long until another session of parliament can begin?

In effect Parliament is closed, the parties are all off for their conferences and other jollies they may have planned.

It begins with the State opening of Parliament and the Queens speech. I do not know the exact date, but its about 6 weeks or so.

Parliament can be recalled in the event of an emergency.

Like if we lose another centre back to injury?

He'd absolutely win a confidence vote.
He absolutely possibly might.

You have to remember, all Tories loathe the prospect of a Corbyn government. They find it abhorrent. I cannot imagine any of them, even the sacked ones or resigned ones would vote to let in Corbyn.

So if the DUP were persuaded to support the government, Corbyn would likely lose it. Depends on how the land lies with the DUP, should this circumstance arise (which probably won't anyway).
