Looking at the figure, how many fans would sell any of those players for the amount of current£value?

just take the value(s) of our defenders, and run it alongside the ridiculous figure paid for Maguire, or our front three compared with Pogba's price tag and the ludicrous numbers being bandied around elsewhere (Bale, for instance)...

Player for player, position for position City's team is far and above those figures.

Would we sell Sergio for £58m? Hell no. If he's happy (which he is) he's worth twice, three times that much.

And, tbf, would any team offering £58m expect to get him at that price?

Maybe i'm taking it a bit too seriously :)

I never said I agreed with the valuations but the data is often used as a source, my calculations were simply to illustrate exactly how piss poor and lacking context the press have been about reporting the figures.

Simply put any publications reporting it as the squad cost rather than the squad value, is spreading incorrect information.

The whole €1Bn squad thing is not based on their "valuations", it's based on the transfer fees spent to bring them in. It's not miles away either if you tot it up.

The squad did cost about £890m to put together, which you worked out yourself because you pointed to it being ~£795 last season before Rodri, Cancelo and Angelino came in.

Having the most expensive squad in the world is not something to be ashamed of. It's the best squad and every player in there has been a good use of the money, many are worth 3x what we paid.

Only about £140m off the current value.

What's do you mean by current value?

I expect it to be 5-10% off with regards to the transfer fees.

These things are pretty meaningless anyway, we have a young squad and others will catch up in value quickly. Madrid wanted Pogba, +200m, Coutinho goes back to Barcelona +150m etc.

IMO the most interesting part of the CIES report was hidden in the monthly report where it said we'd spent €1600m in the past decade, which means that ~65% of all the money we've spent is currently in the squad. Other clubs had much lower % which shows how efficient our spending has been on the whole.

Is that 1600 including infrastructure? It sounds high for players, unless they're using the transfermarkt prices, where the euro price has inflated as the pound is worth less.

No, just normal gross spend on players since the takeover. Given the current squad of 25 players cost about £850m it doesn't seem outlandish that we spent another 550 on every other player from 09 to now.

I didn't argue that we don't have the the most expensive squad, I said they are publishing incorrect information which ever way you want to spin it and I do take issue with that.

Also the Manchester Evening News reported on the same original source and said it was based off player valuations(I gave you the link), I believe that is probably the case because our squad cost hasn't reached 1bn Euros yet.

I also didn't work it out to be £795M at all, I gave the figure £765m but that figure was transferleague.co.uk's figure, which I believe to be too high(see below). Even by their reckoning though the total comes in at £850m which is around 950m euros. This is when you factor in who's left as well as who's come in. I'm sure you understand however "small" 50m euros difference is to some, it would still be incorrect to call City the first 1bn euro squad.

Why I believe the above sums are incorrect is. Our current PL registered squad is 23players in size, adding players not on that list would be disingenuous when talking about squad cost. Using known transfer fees that are publicly available and accepted as correct. I believe BJL's figure is closest to the actual squad cost at around £782m, which is 875m Euros. 125m Euros is a significant difference by anyone's measure, especially those clubs comparing our spend with theirs.

It's not about being ashamed of anything, it's about certain people trying to discredit anything the team does by planting the seeds for remarks such as: "They should be winning, their squad cost £1bn, it's not that impressive at all anyone could do it". Yes they already do it but it will become far more prevalent if we just sit back and if it's incorrect why should we?

800-900m becomes a billion, euros become pounds and that's exactly what the BBC and the like wanted the conversation to be.

It wouldn't surprised me if we hear "£1bn worth of players on the pitch vs £100m" at some point in the near future.

Called it:

Euros become pounds - Check
Squad becomes first 11 - Check, being deliberately misleading, by saying it should have been more because Laporte wasn't part of the two in defence.

It wont be the first time they do this, they will make it stick.
