That's a myth. Last season we only conceded 5 in the first 12 (never more than once in a game) with a 6 match clean sheet streak with him in the team and he played a big part of that.

its not just the goals conceeded though is it.....

its the chances other teams create due to his mistakes....as i said when he came back from his first injury he looked like he had got to grips a bit beter with his defending but those mistakes today are not the first time he has played like that....

Yeah but you're exaggerating. He gave away the odd chance due to an error in his last run but no more than any of our other perfectly good defenders.

HHAHA...fuck off!

I also said it could be rustiness but he has played like that before and to say he hasnt it just being blind...go back and check his performances in other games.....fantastic going forward but very suspect at times defending.....after the first injury he ame bak and looked like he had got to grips a bit better with the defending part.

Even Pep is qouted as saying "he will need to learn how we play." Trust in Pep! ?? !!!
All of which can be put down to rustiness, he hasn’t had a two month spell or full pre season of playing football in two years.

I do trust in Pep and it’s patently obvious Pep believes he is and will be our first choice left back.

Mendy has touch of Stones in him..in that they make the occasional obviously woeful mistake of a pass that leads to counters or chances but their best traits are rare.

Personally, I think that’s just a byproduct where you have to accept that’s part of who they are as players. Their talent is so superior but it won’t always look ‘clean and smooth’ like it does for Dave. Sane is a great example.

Edit: small side point but I can expand regarding stones. Pep recently said that he needs to accept that mistakes happen and I’m guessing Pep is alluding to anxiety because John is aware of his mistakes.

And I think he will be as well but as i said that sloppy passing we have seen numerous times before at different points in his stop start career. Pep has been quite harsh in his assessment on Mendy (or at least not openly gushing about him) in the past so its clear as well that Pep wants more out of him. Pep goes on about his physical attriubtes being so important (which is obvious and that he does clearly have - going forward he is as dangerous as anyone) but defensively he can be an issue... - Id prefer to see Dihno on that side of the back four while laporte is out than ottomendi as those two together could be a recipe for giving goals away. - it nearly happened today early on

agree - but his reluctance to use his right foot even for short passes reduces his passing options sometimes and its this type of tny detail that people pick up on and plan to take advantage of....its what causes his poor passing at times

It’s a good discussion and you’ve pinpointed an exact situation where the mistakes are made. That’s what makes this portion of the forum fun IMO, and my favorite. I’m not sure what the point is if we’re not pointing out areas of improvements.

Anyone who criticises Mendy today when he hasn’t played for nearly 2 years really needs to re think. He will need a few games and many more minutes before we can pass judgement. Give the lad a chance and give him our support

Yeah it's no shock he is looking tentative out there. One more bad injury and his career could be over. Once he regains his confidence in his body he will be a beast down that left hand side.
