Another new Brexit thread

Oh i totally agree....but to say that 64 million people think this, is wishful thinking. Lets be honest, the VAST majority of people neither understand the added complexity of NI nor give a toss enough to have an opinion on it. Theyd gladly just ignore the issue or just give "us" up (cos thats how we're seen...as something GB can just give away.)

Tbh, im not really arsed any more....ive never been scared of a united ireland....quite like the idea in many ways....but as has been discussed before, a UI is not what many would expect.

Yes I do agree with all of that. I don't profess to know enough about it myself and I probably know a damned sight more than most!

But it will be fascinating to see in what direction Boris takes this. The fact is he does not need the ERG now, and I am pretty certain that Boris himself is not a paricularly hard line Brexit supporter. So he has the option if he chooses to pursue a softer Brexit now, in order to get his FTA done. There are still red lines of course - he could not surrender control of FOM or there would be riots. But does he steer the UK closer to the US or stay closely aligned to the EU? Interesting times!

I will end though by saying - as I have said before - the EU is shit scared about Singapore_on_Thames, 26 miles off the coast of France. And Boris has HUGE negotiating power in threatening it. It is striking that in the early hours of Friday morning, Barnet was talking about now presing ahread with a Brexit deal which "ensures a level playing field". Very revealing: They are worried we will not agree to this.

The odd thing is we just had an election to ‘Get Brexit done’ yet we have no definitive idea what the answer to this question will be. And we have no definitive answer because nobody bothered to ask the question. Shouldn't we have asked for directions before we voted?

The public have spoken Bob. They want Brexit done and probably - my guess - are day by day, less fussed about how or what.

Fair enough.
We know you don’t give a flying fuck about us and have been trying to tell them up North that the same applies to them for over a century.

Truth is it was an unnatural Tory solution to a difficult Democratic situation they found themselves in back in the early 1900’s.
And Carson could complain about being sold out all he liked but he and his party put the then government in a predicament by not accepting a democratic vote.
Here we are back at square one in the early 2000’s.
An undercurrent of a threat of violence included.

I unfortunately agree with you AWG.
I have this awful fear that when you are cast aside by the UK, it will be without a plan and an unholy mess could be left behind.

Don’t count on it. When it all goes tits up they’ll be back complaining it wasn’t done correctly, and it would have been a roaring success if not for the incompetence of ......, or obstructive Remainers prevented it being done right. They’ll never take ownership.

I was thinking more when Brexit fails to make their area a better place - fails to make them rich - fails to create jobs but does mean further deterioration of their local NHS services - no improvement in road and rail - when the people of Middleton don't see any change at all. When that happens they must claim ownership due to their actions.

And yet there are still far more non EU migrants in the UK than EU migrants

I think it just makes a softer brexit more likely. We'll immediately go for some sort of immigration control and come the end of 2020 will just end up taking whatever else is on the table and purport it as a triumph.

Not what Gove said on TV this morning .... he said a Hard Brexit was still on the table.... and Johnson is to legislate to prevent MPs extending the Brexit transition period beyond 2020.

I'm very very happy for you to continue with the delusion that it was. And thereby guaranteeing a Tory victory in the 2024 general election. Not that it isn't guaranteed anyway. No party has ever in the history of our Parliament, gained 120+ seats in one GE so you are fucked any which way. Shame.
