Could have had blue anytime we wanted if anyone cared.
Could we have had it without the words "European Union" on the top?

I mean we had blue passports when we were a member of the EEC, but there was no "European Economic Community" stamped on it.

Don't know never cared enough to ask anyone.

No one did, another myth.

The idea that it is a logical move to go back to blue passports is revealing as going backwards is how this feels.

Be interesting to hear if there are any genuinely new possibilities that the 1st of Feb and beyond throws up. Joining the EEC/EU was a proper step into something different that had never been tried on that scale before.

The lack of vision is worrying and does suggest this was all to do with the colour of our passport and a trade deal with the US or China after all.

There's the challenge for today then, avoiding subjective assessments regarding our relative economic worth, can anyone come up with something inspirational that we can get excited about?

We always had a choice of colour for our passports .... it didn't have to be burgundy. But now we choose to leave the Eu we chose 'Blue' ...... the colour that was imposed on us by the League of Nations .

Taking back control? or simply missing the days of Empire
Why should it matter to people what colour the passports are - that was not the reason that we left the EU and suggesting such is just Remainer nonsense.

But as we are leaving and therefore should differentiate from the EU - this seems a sensible choice

My own personal wish is that we use the freedom from the CAP to genuinely reform our farming industry. Yes, there should be subsidies to keep farming viable, but they should be geared towards quality, environmental impact and animal welfare. Lets use this opportunity to make our farming sector the best in class, and not use our money to subsidise fat French farmers.

Thanks for responding. I know little about CAP or farming really but this definitely sounds positive. Do you think that this is possible and is there a group or an individual that is in place to bring such a change about?

I'd like to think we would, very much doubt it though as many farms are now owned by big businesses who put managers and staff into the farms. I suspect the subsidies will stay as they are but come from the UK gavernment instead of the EU.

No idea, it's something that would be at the top of my list though.

You don't seem to be understanding what he, others and I were/are actually saying

You are also not setting out the full scope of the exchange - just selecting some words to try and use to run the UK/Brexit down - hence my comment

I fear for you should the UK actually achieve a decent TA with the US or EU

If you consider the US then - as long as Trump or Trump-type doctrine is there then its American First. Look at his actions with China because of a trade imbalance then ask yourself why - given that we export more to the US than we import - would Trump want to do anything except reverse that? Remember he see's himself as the deal maker - every deal made before he came into office he refers to as the worst deal in history and bad for the States - so there is no great deal for the UK there - just the deal he will allow us to have and that will be in America's favour. Trump see's it all in black and white as win or lose - and he see's himself as the ultimate winner.

Johnson is talking about us being outside the EU and getting a better deal with Japan than the one they have just signed with the EU. That deal forbids Japan offering anyone a better deal on anything than they deal they have with the EU - ARTICLE 8;17 of the Japan / EU deal. Johnson either knows that and is lying or is stupid and doesn't know that.

Its not talking the country down its understanding the potential harm coming our way because in dealing with the UK on its own or the EU as a 27 country bloc where is the incentive for Japan to offer us an awful lot?

All you are going to end up with is a change in colour on the passports.

Absolutely correct.

Incredible how some people don't seem to have the capacity to even understand the basics.

And push food prices up? Better quality costs - thats why fillet steak costs more than stewing steak. What do we do about imports? Push the price of our fancy meat up and cheap imports are bound to follow - we Brits love a bargain and traditionally spend far less on our weekly food bill than other developed countries. The answer would be to subsidise our farmers to such an extent that fillet steak from our beef cattle and our free range chickens were as cheap as imports but then by your logic it leads to fat UK farmers - oh and for the most parts exports would be out of the question as I am pretty sure nowhere would like to take in heavily subsidised produce from the UK and undercut their own farming industry.

Indeed. We're in a cul-de-sac of our own making, and there's literally no way out without giving something up. I was reading the other day, in order to sort out trade deals with countries that already have a deal with the EU, we need 'full cumulation and diagonal rules of origin'. And the only body that can grant us that is the EU - there's a lot of hot air about us being critical to the EU and it'll fold without us blah blah, but that is the key issue here. We're going to be over a barrel however it pans out. Just hoping that our ties with the EU means they lube up first, and being a taker ends up as pleasurable as possible.

Article 8.17 of the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement

"Each Party shall accord to services and service suppliers of the other Party treatment no less favourable than that it accords to like services and service suppliers of a third country."
