Maybe he didn’t want to go high enough to see any curvature, he might have looked silly. Even at 35000 feet unless you are in a cockpit you can’t see it.

It can’t be seen from a passenger seat, it needs a wide angle view, so a cockpit but is also dependent on weather and a clear landscape at that height, To be sure of seeing it you would need to be a fair bit higher.
