I just know that this is going to be a stupid question - but fuck it I don't mind embarrassing myself

I have a spare supply of antibiotics - and I am considering starting a course to try and help

Now I know that 'logically' antibiotics should not work as they treat bacteria rather than viruses - but I am guessing that if you get the virus the complications could leading to bacterial co-infection?

Just wondering.
For once you're correct. It is a stupid question. ;-p

  • Antibiotics only work on bacteria.
  • Antiviral drugs work on (most) viruses.
  • You should never take them unless/until you need them and are prescribed them by a doctor.
  • If you do need them, then complete the course.
  • Antibiotics can have a short shelf life, depending on the type.
  • Doctors advise that, despite use-by dates being up to 3 years, that they are returned. after 1 year maximum.
  • Don't throw them in the bin, take them back to the pharmacy/surgery.

2% mortality rate is pretty normal for flu. In all the hype, people seem to have forgotten how many people die every year both in this country and elsewhere from 'normal' seasonal flu.
Seasonal flu has a mortality of about 0.1% Flu has been going around a long time so a lot of people have immunity to it so the spread is less. Potentially it is considerably more serious than a standard flu season.

Are you for real....you'd be better off going outside and running around in circles waving your arms about.

it really isn’t. Flu’s mortality rate is about 0.05%

Presently, Iran is a bigger threat for spreading of corona virus than China but powers to be are sleeping.

Iran has many religious sites which are visited by millions of Shia Muslims every year from around the world. Moreover, there standards of healthcare are pretty dire. This poses a serious threat to whole region. According to official statistics issued by Iran's health ministry reported cases are 134 with 19 dead which makes their fatality rate highest.

Today, Pakistan reported its first confirmed case of a 22 year old who visited Iran recently with his family to religious sites in Iran.

An important article in NY Times:

The only people at risk for this thing are elders, who are already past their reproductive age. It has no consequence in an evolutionary sense. As for the strength of humans, what do we need to be strong enough for? Why should some humans be too weak to be left alive? We don't have to fight for food in the savannah anymore, we lost those traits long ago. Don't worry, evolution works just fine without any help; if you are strong enough for the environment you live in, you survive.

You have the potential to make for a worrisome clinician. "Doctor Uffa is ready to see you now ...go straight on in"

Go and get a nice big bottle of White Lightening to wash them down.

Lmao, probably something to do with my inability to express myself well in English.

I like the thought of instilling fear in patients, but sadly I never wanted to pursue a career in medicine. "Dr. Uffa" though... the title is tempting...

The advice is to stay away from your GP, just as it is if you thought you had the flu

But you are right about the testing.

In my opinion they should identify who has been to these places and go to their houses to test them

People shouldn’t be going to their GP when suspecting they might have this. They should be ringing 111 in the first instance and staying at home away from the public.

if you think you have got it I think the advice is phone 111 and talk to the nhs that way.

Unless things have changed, the main difference between this and a cold is this in the most part only hits the chest. If you have a runny nose with it it’s probably just a cold.

Really my point regarding GPs is more in general they are unataibable at short notice.

As for 111 I have called them twice in my life with beonchial issues, their advice. Go see my GP, and I know it would be differernt atm but some will be reticent to bother.

The main point is where is the info coming out for those that suspect they have it? bar snippets in the news and looking it up yourself, tge government has been very inactive where the general public and information is concered

Even a broardcast information film similar to the ones in the 70s just outlining what to do would make sense, I mean money gets spunked away by government on shit ads all the time, why not do something usefull

Guy I work with is going to Taiwan tomorrow for 2 weeks. Do you think it would be wrong of me to raise an issue with management as to what procedure will be when he comes back to work. He's a stupid scouser who won't give a shit if he's ill or not and just come strolling in coughing.
I have copd so this would finish me off of I catch anything.
Good chance to murder him and get away with it!

Trending #1 on YouTube Italy right now, unfortunately doesn't have English subtitles as of yet.

Advice given in the video:
1. Wash your hands well.
2. Sneeze or cough against the crook of your arm; basically, dab.
3. Avoid kisses and hugs among acquaintances (probably easier for you Brits). You can blink to each other instead.
4. Don't discriminate just because of irrational fears linked to the country of origin of the virus.
5. If you find yourself in quarantine for two weeks, use that time to cook loads of pasta sauce slowly on low heat. It will taste better and you can even sell it for a lot of money.
6. You might need to change some of your habits, but it's a small sacrifice to protect everyone's health.
7. Trust doctors and scientists, not Internet strangers or unqualified friends.
8. Don't panic, we're in this together (albeit at a safe distance). And some Italian things I can't translate.

On a more serious note, our government has given us clear guidelines but they're pretty much common sense and you guys aren't even in our same situation at the moment.
Just go about your daily life normally and wash your hands carefully, plus maybe don't stand very close to someone who's wheezing and coughing. If you have a fever and intense cough/trouble breathing, you might want to call your emergency number for advice (in your case it's 111 if I understood correctly).
