0.3%?

News here continually repeating 0.1% mortality rate for annual flu, which I have read in numerous locations.

Either way, COVID-19 is 10-20 TIMES as deadly as the flu. In any crowd of 100 people with the virus, 2 to 4 will be dead within a month...not pretty!

I don’t worry about it personally but my mum has COPD so would almost certainly be at huge risk if exposed to this.

Yeah but flu kills around 0.3% of those affected And we actually have a vaccine for that which keeps the numbers relatively low (note that’s flu and not the common cold).

Covid19 kills somewhere between 2-4% with a similar R0 (rate at which it spreads) and there’s no vaccine.

The last time there was a proper global pandemic like Covid19 was 1918’s “Spanish” flu (although it was slightly less lethal) and it killed between 50-100m in a two year period.

There’s a common theory that the Spanish Flu killed that many due to the poor conditions and infections caused as a result of the conditions.

It also killed a high proportion of young adults because it destroyed part of the immune system.

This Coronavirus doesn’t do that and therefore the healthy are much much more likely to survive this than Spanish Flu.

I didn’t watch it but apparently there is/was a good documentary on the iPlayer

I just did a bit of reading on it last night.

They kept many in awful, cramped conditions and they reckon many died from other infections as a result. It also would damage the immune system pretty heavily and therefore the death rate for young, healthy adults soared much higher than Covid19 is doing and will do.

Depends which you read but you’re right, it’s far more deadly.

Here’s hoping although it’s not great news for the elderly.

They showed a bit of footage inside the hotel and mentioned that they put on a buffet for the guests.... I mean the buffet is one of the greatest ways to spread a virus everybody handles the same tongs to put your food of your plates.... f****** insane.
They're also handing out information leaflets in Dublin airport. Each to their own but I'd rather the health service here didn't create a cross contamination scenario in our biggest airport.

New York's Dow Jones has recorded its biggest one-day points fall in history as the coronavirus stock market sell-off gathered pace.

The Wall Street index fell by 1,191 points, or 4.4%, as share indices across the globe entered "correction" territory amid heightening worries about the economic impact of the outbreak.

It put US markets on course for their worst week since October 2008 - at the height of the financial crisis.

Earlier on Thursday, the FTSE-100 suffered its biggest one day fall in percentage terms since August 2015.

Markets in London, Europe, and the US were in so-called "correction" territory after the latest declines - meaning they have lost more than 10% of values off their most recent highs.

The FTSE's fall of 3.49%, or 246 points, knocked £62bn off the combined value of the its constituent companies - and meant they are £152bn down over the course of the week so far.

The latest falls came after declines in Asia overnight linked to the latest COVID-19 developments including confirmation that a woman had been reinfected in Japan.

Fake news. I'm reliably informed the white house have their own info that shows it's the bestest ever week for the stock exchange.

How big is a “mass gathering “ ? 100+? 1000? 10000?

a good way of controlling it spreading , is before the game on Wednesday get all the 3000 city fans penned into a City cordon , all penned in together , squashed not able to move for a while before deciding to let them in.

Just seen that the final two stages of the UAE Tour cycling race have been cancelled after two Italian team members tested positive for COVID-19. All riders and teams (including Chris Froome) now quarantined in hotels on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi awaiting test results.

Yeah it’s the very young and very old I have concerns for.

We need to think about what to do with my old nan if it gets bad, especially if we get it as a family.

She’ll struggle for food.

Will probably stockpile for her in the coming weeks if it spreads here.
