Im off to Rome next Friday to watch The England v Italy game on TV, as it is now being played behind closed doors, I will then self quarantine for a few weeks if we lose....!
Pure selfishness as is all panic buying.
That’s the attitude that’s going to make this even worse. Too many people don’t want to take any responsibility. Rigorous hand washing and SELF ISOLATION is essential. If you have symptoms don’t go waltzing round A&E. I have no faith in humanity to do the sensible thing. At this rate, anyone who doesn’t get it early and develops severe respiratory problems is going to be fucked because the nation doesn’t look like it will play it’s part in dragging the spread out over 4 or 5 months instead of over 1 or 2.All a bit overblown, mate! If I have symptoms of COVID-19 and I have it, then I have been spreading the wealth across the country for about the past two weeks! Wearing a mask to go to the ER and asking them for the test isn’t going to threaten anyone. FWIW, I have premium (union contract, $800/mo) health care, so not worried about that!
NEWSFLASH: THIS IS NOT EBOLA...ITS NOT EVEN SARS...ITS A VIRUS WITH AN ELEVATED KILL RATE OVER THE REGULAR FLU, BUT 80% OF INFECTED PATIENTS HAVE MILD TO MODERATE EFFECTS AND NO LIFE THREATENING SYMPTOMS.
Tbh, I’m more concerned about the effect on my job than I am on my health! Company stock down 40% (21% this week), flights cut, pilots taking voluntary leave, others taking 33% monthly pay cuts to stay home (probably a 25-50% pay cut coming for me from reduced schedules in April), pay increases cancelled until at least July, hiring freeze, widebody international aircraft being brought into the domestic market for transcontinental and vacation locations still showing strength, etc, etc, etc...
Not to characterize anyone in any particular way, but have we all lost our minds?
If you get sick, do the USUAL SELF QUARANTINE and stay home. Take care of yourself and exercise the normal cautions (wash hands a lot, use tissues to cough and sneeze and then throw them away in a hygienic manner, keep surfaces clean and as germ free as possible, etc...). If you get sicker, then seek medical care, making sure you accurately describe your symptoms and be tested for COVID-19.
They say 80% of people will have mild symptoms. In fact, we’ve had two cases down the street from me. One of them (the husband) was recently released from hospital, while the wife is still there. He was on the news today and said his symptoms were LESS SEVERE THAN THE REGULAR FLU! He is a 70 year old man, overweight, clearly leading a lower working class life...so a seemingly perfect bullseye for these respiratory viruses...so it’s hard to know who or how it levels some and barely affects others.
I read an interesting description of the manner in which it attacks people and the mechanism of destroying the lungs, by honeycombing them, scarring and hardening them, and then being unable to deal with fluid pooling in them and thus killing them via pneumonia.
Therefore, to me, it seems like the minute you start to have respiratory distress with flu like symptoms, then you get yourself off to the ER for a COVID-19 test!

Exactly. I beleive they've cancelled the Rome and Paris marathons, the people who have booked flights and hotels are still going to travel unless they can get their money back, same with the 6 nations fans, they'll now just go on the piss longer, not really going to change much if anything. The point still stands - if you stop 100k peope from going to a big event, unless you tell them to stay at home they are still going to go out and do things and interact with people.
I think you either go big and shut down everything non essential or you just accept it is going to spread. Shutting down the public transport systems would be a place to start.
Is it worth it considering how effective it would be - probbably not.
Try not to worry too much mate, fear can be another virus in itself, the people infected is tiny right now. Im waiting until we have a full on armagedon situation till i start changing my life.been washing my hands regular, prob up to 30 times a day so can do nothing more, what bothers me is family contamination, thats where me as an individual is most likely to get it, maybe my lad or daughter picks it up at work or the mrs does then contaminates the home, so its realy out of my control and thats not a good feeling when you lose control

I’m due to go to San Diego in July for comic con (yep I’m a geek) if it’s cancelled like Schwarzenegger has just done to a big convention I’m still going to San Diego for 6 nights, unless BA specifically cancel my flight and refund me.Exactly. As someone pointed out, this is not particularly reassuring for old, ill people. In fact rather the opposite. The stats are truly terrifying if you fit into both brackets.Yes, what people are missing is the "who dies from this?" question.
It's the old or ill. So when looking at mortality rates per country you need to factor in general health and age.

Yeah it’s much worse than Ebola and SARS. The kill rate of Ebola means it has a relatively low R0 as it’s infectious once symptoms appear.NEWSFLASH: THIS IS NOT EBOLA...ITS NOT EVEN SARS...ITS A VIRUS WITH AN ELEVATED KILL RATE OVER THE REGULAR FLU, BUT 80% OF INFECTED PATIENTS HAVE MILD TO MODERATE EFFECTS AND NO LIFE THREATENING SYMPTOMS
Just ran out for more ice cream. Is @karen7 still alive?
