The total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK is now 273, a rise of 67, the biggest in a 24-hour period.

The new total is up from a figure of 206 which the Department of Health and Social Care released yesterday.

The vast majority of cases are in England. London has at least 51 cases, the South East 41 and the South West 35. The region with the smallest number is the North East and Yorkshire with at least 18.

The Department of Health and Social Care says more than 23,500 people have been tested for the virus.

Calls to the NHS 111 service have increased by more than a third compared with the same period last year, with 120,000 extra calls in the first week of March, the department said.

The department's website said: "As of 9am on 8 March 2020, 23,513 people have been tested in the UK, of which 23,240 were confirmed negative and 273 were confirmed as positive. Two patients who tested positive for COVID-19 have died."

Earlier, health secretary Matt Hancock said on Saturday night that the government was doing everything in its power to be ready to delay the threat from coronavirus - which has now killed more than 3,600 people worldwide.

There are concerns the NHS may struggle to cope if the virus spreads quickly, so self-isolation will be used to try to slow it down.

Professor Martin Marshall, chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners, told Sky News using retired doctors was "a good idea" if it was done carefully.

Speaking to the Sophy Ridge on Sunday programme, he said: "Those doctors, because they would likely to be a higher risk group, would not do face-to-face patient contact but there's lots of other things they can do, like managing 111, providing online care for patients.

Meanwhile, Moscow has announced a prison term of up to five years for those who fail to self-isolate.
bit extreme !

My experience of 111 has been great,i have spoken to them 2/3 times this week, they are quick to answer and have arranged both of my visits in to get help, just do what they tell you to do if you need to call them

The good news from this is that only around 1% of the people tested so far in UK, have come back with a positive diagnosis.

of 25k of people who think they may have it only 273 actually in fact had it. So the rest must have had the usual cold/ flu.
Goes back to what many of us have been saying about the health system strain implications of the outbreak — it’s not just about the people who actually contracted the virus (though, that is very problematic, as well).

Give your fanny a wipe.
Yeah so when someone has tried to explain to you how serious this actually is, which is something you really don’t want to hear for the impact it has on your job industry, you just say give your high brow, well researched answer of wiping the fanny.

Stop trying to likes this to flu. It’s nothing like. It’s atleast an order of magnitude worse. All your hoping and wishing and wanting it to go away means fuck all in the real world.

Let’s keep calm, lads, and move on.

Carrying on personal disputes and/or personal abuse will lead to thread (or temp) bans, so better to avoid that.
How about making the point to the mouth breather to stop trying to down play this as the flu.

World governments would not be reacting as they are if it was the sniffles.

I’m not sure how to say this any other way, but I’ve said it before...I’m not worried about my job. Financially, I could retire tomorrow, but I’d prefer to add another 9 years of earnings to that retirement to help make it even better. Additionally, I’m 3000/13000, so the shit has to get real real for me to be seriously affected. My second kid is finishing college in 2 months, so that expense is behind us.

So, much as you are trying to personalize this, you’re barking up the wrong tree.

Lastly, if it makes you feel better, I have been sharing some of the better arguments from here on the pilot forum I frequent, where there are certainly some pilots who are completely dismissive, sometimes out of fear of their jobs, I think. I’m actually trying to be more like you on there, because I think people really are trying to talk it down. That and th fact that too many of them get their info from Trump!!

it’s not like flu you keep saying but...

the symptoms are like flu.

it can develop in the lungs and develop into a very dangerous pneumonia like flu

some people die of it like flu

it’s more dangerous if you are elderly like flu.

it passes from person to person by sneezing and coughs like flu

it can pass from touching hands like flu.

the health experts , the chief science officer and chief medical officer regularly refer to it and compare symptoms and death rates to flu.

Those people who think they have got coronavirus and been tested and the 24.5k who have not got it probably had the flu .

but yeah keep saying it’s not like flu.

The point has been made, several times. He can post in ignorance if he wants, and you, I, and others can continue to refute it.

We just need to leave out the personal disputes and abuse for obvious reasons.
