we cannot short cut trials, there is a legal as well as ethical rules to follow

yes you’re right and I fully understand that as I used to work on the biotech sector for a little while at a bank so had to follow the rules carefully on pipe line product business. However we are in unprecedented times and I suspect that there may be a degree of copy and paste latitude available to us here due to some of the similarities of the properties of this virus being mainly known to us. That’s just my hunch at this stage by the way.

I can’t see it killing under several million worldwide mate unfortunately. Even in a best case scenario.
I guess all we can do is hope you're wrong and that, should it be as bad as you seem to think, that a reduction in other types of deaths may lead to a bit of an offset.

The similarities will help, and the Chinese putting the genetic structure up quickly will also help.

I expect there still to be checks and balances on taking shortcuts.

Just leaving these here from a month ago when quite a few on here were certain everything would return to normal fairly shortly and there would be only a very limited impact on the world, calling those of us just looking to warn of what was coming “fear mongers”, some with no small amount of vitriol.

Regardless of whether this gets worse or better over the next month (unfortunately, all evidence points to the former, putting it mildly), there are going to be far-reaching political, social, and economic implications within China and around the world. These implications are magnified by the global economies shift to greater import/export trade (specifically dependent on Chinese manufacturing) and just-in-time supply chains (which breakdown almost immediately with even short disruptions in the network).

Unfortunately, the genie is already out of the bottle, even ignoring the great and tragic threat to human health/life.

This is a fairly good overview of the current and potential future global economic impact of this coronavirus outbreak, a second order effect that can be as devastating in the long-term (though obviously in a different way) to China and the world-at-large as the horrible direct impact on human life of the illness itself.

The coronavirus is already hurting the world economy. Here's why it could get really scary.

I am in the process of transferring two pensions into my works pension at the moment, i was told it may take 3 to 4 weeks to complete, that was 3 weeks ago and im concerned niw about the transfer value.

The value is trashed whether you move them or not. On a slightly positive note, many pension funds are invested in a mixture of equities and government bonds (so as to spread risk) and the bond markets are not so badly affected - in fact some have gone up, as safer havens for investors than equities right now. This should be especially true for anyone nearing retirement, since the pension provider *should* have started transitioning you to a safer portfolio in order to minimise the risk of any big market crash wrecking your pension just before retirement.

Comments like Trump’s there are so exasperating, especially when he’s one of the most powerful people on the planet. Why not mention how many hundreds of millions of cases those flu deaths came from? And how many deaths COVID-19 would be responsible for with the same number of cases, should we not take actions to mitigate it? And this is the President of the US. I mean, just... what the fuck.

The FTSE100 was at 6950.6 31/12/1999. I doubt many experts back then would've guessed at it being 1000 points lower more than 20 years later. :')

Great for those in my boat who're young and can buy stocks on sale now. But I'd be somewhat more upset if I were in my 50s....

Hope you recover soon. If memory serves you're a nurse aren't you?

Times like these where the wider public (myself included) really need to show support for the people working on the front line. If I'm correct in what I'm saying, thanks for putting your neck on the line to help others. It's a very commendable thing to do.

Cancelling sports events and closing public places would be "premature" - culture secretary

Money before health

They are relying on individuals to do the right thing

Ex nurse for a long time time,i do however know the signs well in advance which has been a huge advantage

Translated:

“So last year 1 in every 1,000 Americans who had the common Flu died from it. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment 1 in every 25 Americans who have been confirmed to have contracted the novel coronavirus has died. Think about that!”

What a ****ing imbecile leading the supposed free world.

(Note: I am aware the CFR is skewed because of the woefully limited testing being carried out in the US; I am only translating his tweet to its actual meaning to show how incredibly moronic it is.)
