COVID-19 — Coronavirus

You’d be surprised how many negative reactions we received. Or maybe you wouldn’t bearing in mind how utterly mad society has become over recent years. Doesn’t really bother me too much but really bothered my wife. Every fucker had an opinion and most of the opinions were that we were cunts. Shows how quickly it’s moving though, within a couple of days the penny dropped with most of them. Thanks everyone for the kind words btw.
I’ve had that already. I have a 7 month old and have free tickets to Chester Zoo that expire at the end of March. The plan was to go as close to then as possible and hope this shit weather we’ve had improved. We were going with the in-laws and my son’s cousins. They genuinely think I’m mad for saying I’m not letting my boy go any more and I’m staying home. As nice as it would have been, it’s just not essential travel, so I’m cutting out all such things. People still think that’s crazy, even today.

What is the mortality rate of the new coronavirus?

It is probably about or a bit less than 1%. Much higher figures have been flying about, but the chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, is one of those who believes it will prove to be 1% or lower. The World Health Organization’s director general, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, talked of 3.4%, but his figure was calculated by dividing the number of deaths by the number of officially confirmed cases. We know there are many more mild cases that do not get to hospital and are not being counted, which would bring the mortality rate significantly down.

Deaths are highest in the elderly, with very low rates among younger people, although medical staff who treat patients and get exposed to a lot of virus are thought to be more at risk. But even among the over-80s, 90% will recover.

Nice use of "Crumpsall" there. None of this North Manchester General nonsense.

Always known it as Crumpsall spilling off the tongue far more eloquently than North Manchester General ever could. As an addedendrum aptly named as it nestles within the quaint Hamlet of Crumpsall Village lying 3.5 miles from the City's centre.

We fortunately had not seen a confirmed case in the state I live (US) and were one of the few that didn’t...

Until this week, when the first and second where identified.

Unfortunately for us, the second case confirmed yesterday involves a municipal employee that works at both the City Hall and a city-managed clinic a block from our home.

They have shutdown the clinic and all city buildings for two weeks (at least).

Who knows how far this will go,what we as individuals need to do is be vigilant. This means increased hygene, less social interaction, and if you do think you have it,then isolate yourself for as long as you think is necessary. Hopefully you are fit enough to be one of the herd and leave space in hospitals for those whos lives really are at risk. An emergency helicopter waitng to take you to a newly built anti virus centre, manned with specially trained staff, at the first sign of a sniffle is not gonna happen(even though this is the only acceptable government support for some on here) . Hopefully enough of us are responsible enough for our own actions to impact the spread, and it will die down with as litle impact as possible. Using the situation to spout your pro/anti government stance is the last thing required.I am sure some of those calling for total shut downs will be the first to complain when their favourite brands are unavailable, or their employer goes bust. A certain amount of people will always have to work to maintain infrastructure, what about them, but whatever happens, lets hope for minimal casualties for all. Oh, by the way,I would still rather be here than anywhere else at this time.

What I still don’t get is that this ‘strategy’ is also being used on the continent. Germany have said they anticipate 80% of the population will be infected. France have also said the point is to slow the spread not stop it so the system can cope. The continent are also on a different timeline to us so us taking measures next week that they are implementing now is also consistent. The only difference is no one in Europe has been dumb enough to use the word ‘herd’ thereby implying the population is nothing more than cud chewing bovines and the population here has taken its cue from what is happening on the continent rather than from the Govt.

Perhaps I’m missing something.

It’s a strange old world we live in these days that’s for sure. Just got to do what’s right for your family and as long as that doesn’t harm anyone else, that’s the end of the discussion imo.

That’s no real comfort though. Even narrowing it to over 80s and not over 60, there are 3.2 million over 80 in the UK. If 60% contract COVID-19 (it could be higher), that’s 1.92 million cases in that age group and the death rate is about 15% for them. So almost 300k deaths just over 80 years of age. More of course if more than 60% get it.

Yeah it’s a good point. The real work that needs to be done is piling pressure on China to improve their food hygiene and to stop fingering bats or whatever it is they do.

Yes and any bastard that skin dogs alive needs it doing to themselves !

No mate the whole of Valecia it's like a ghost town no bars restraunts or shops open except supermarkets for now

Done the same in Murcia now. I am in the campo, no food , no shops open, and my flight cancelled on Tuesday.

And now they have shut the bars, the bars, I thought that could not happen here.
Marooned in a little house up a mountain.

Zaragoza and Barcelona apparently soon to follow.

Not the bars, of course, but some of the shops closing is making it a nightmare to plan for care for several of the older members of my family, especially in Zaragoza where they can’t move about very far and most of the younger members live quite far away.

Just got on a bus to head out and have me scarf wrapped round covering my mouth and nose.

People looking at me like I might be a ner-do-well rather than someone sensibly covering up.

Anyway, I’m off playing golf and drinking for a few days in a remote village, fuck all better to do.

Hopefully there will be some positive news when I return to civilisation.
