I work for one of the biggest manufacturers of Blood Glucose Monitoring test strips in the world, serving millions diabetic patients worldwide. This weekend we were told that all office staff, with the capability to work from home should do so. Staff in operations/manufacturing are to continue heading into work to make product to serve patients. If the shit really hits the fan over here and manufacturing has to shut down, at some point in the future, when stock is depleted, millions of diabetics around the world are not going to be able to test themselves. Just for a second imagine the knock-on impact of this. My company is just one of thousands in the healthcare industry across the globe in a similar situation.

Those that don't think that coronavirus has that big of an impact, or that its only a small percentage of elderly people, with underlying health issues will be affected, need to wake up. It is much, much bigger than that. Only small percentages may die from coronavirus itself but many millions more will be seriously impacted across all walks of life. The relatively small number of deaths from coronavirus will be reported daily, what isn't being reported is the many more deaths from other illnesses, that can be directly attributed back to the impact of coronavirus.

Give Liverpool the title, dont give them the title. Relegate the bottom three teams as it currently stands, dont relegate them. Promote Leeds, dont promote Leeds. It means NOTHING, at this moment in time football is NOTHING.

It's impossible mate, the youth need to catch it rid it from their bodies and help keep the country running and protecting those who have come before us. All these countries in lock down will have to repeat the process again in the future until a vaccine has been made.

Only if someone who was infected flew here and started to infect people.

it took China till 21st Jan to get to about 250 cases, pretty low odds of them being ones that travel to Europe?

To be honest mate, I think the best way to protect everyone is to protect those most at risk first.

It's the at risk group who are going to need hospital attention if they catch it.

If loads of the at risk group catch it at the same time, it's going to overload the NHS and mean there are no beds for other needs.

The whole strategy now seems to be about managing the volume of cases and spreading it out so that it's manageable.

My own view is that we should all take personal responsibility to halt the rate of the spread, for the good of everyone else.
 
It was around 25th Jan that there was a great deal of travel to and from China for the New Year celebrations.

If China was telling the truth.

If they confirmed a case mid November I will bet there were a hell of a lot with it by then. I very much doubt they got the first to get it, or even realised what was going on when they had their first fatality.

There are plenty from Wuhan going back and forth to Europe.

Would you rule out it having been in the UK and Europe well before xmas?

As I understand it (and I could be wrong) Herd immunity takes years to build up. You can’t do it in months. You are more likely to have a vaccine ready than acquire significant ‘natural’ herd immunity. Arguably you cannot get sufficient herd immunity without a vaccine anyway. We have seen a spike in measles cases due to anti-vaccine sentiment and that’s with what 95% herd immunity?

China has introduced several measures to prevent reinfection and/or detect it early. Some of this is voluntary on the part of the public like curtailing social activity but also movement tracking and body temperature tracking via apps so that any sudden cluster spikes can be identified early on and isolated. China does think ‘controlled’ virus spread is a mistake but since all European countries are assuming it will spread no matter what they do then I guess it’s a moot point.

We joked about the Chinese deliberately infecting loads of defence workers at the Milipol exhibition late November, as loads of us came back with what we described as manflu on steroids. There were 2 separate Chinese delegations there wandering around looking like death warmed up coughing their guts up every 2 mins. Would almost be nice if it was covid in hindsight as it took me about 6 weeks to shift and my lungs are crap.
