COVID-19 — Coronavirus

For a good while, around China and other parts of the world, they would definitely have attributed the symptoms to the ill as flu and the cause of death for the dead as pneumonia/respiratory failure. This goes back further in the Winter, for sure.

We'll never know I guess. It wasn't pleasant for sure. In my lifetime I've never seen a worldwide situation like this with countries in lockdown. I do believe there is a lot more to this than meets the eye that is being kept quiet, but you can drive yourself nuts reading all the conspiracy theories.

not just the over 60s that are at risk ... north Brabant has many youngsters in ICU :-(
The population that “half” assessment is based on (those suffering from COVID-19 that require hospitalisation) is very small (apparently currently around 50), though, which can lead to skewed percentages.

As that cohort increases in size, we may see that proportion drop significantly.

The Company that owns BA has £9bn in reserves, I read this afternoon. It’s Virgin in particular who claim to be close to going to the wall without a vast Government subsidy.

Airlines are always vulnerable because they are reliant on a balance of day to day cashflow. If that cashflow sinks then they can fall into insolvency quickly.

That's why every airline that goes bust does so out of the blue because it just takes a really bad day and literally they could have no money to pay for fuel or airport fees. If you have no money for those then you have no money coming in from flying planes and that's you stuffed.

I don't know about Virgin but BA are trying to avoid these cashflow problems by offering flexible fares which keeps the money within the airline.

Edited for accuracy. :-)

Direct deaths from the virus itself

Other deaths from people not being able to get the care they need

People to isolate in particular

Above 70 and those who get offered the flu jab

Anyone with chronic illness including liver and kidney disease

Pregnant women

If anyone in the house get it then everyone has to isolate for 14 days

Why are they asking politely. There should be more weight behind the message. Don’t ask people, force them. Millions in this country will not listen.

I agree it needs to be a lot firmer than this although I am hopeful the vast majority will do the sensible thing.

Think that's a well-written article which explains the reasoning behind the UK strategy and also some criticisms.

Think the main difference between the UK and other countries is whether to try to contain the epidemic as much as possible now or to deal with it in a way that helps to control the expected second wave next winter.

Notably, the infamous Spanish flu killed much more people during its second wave, so it is important to prepare ourselves for what is coming next winter. The counterargument is that we'd do better if we gain time to learn more about the virus and stop a potential catastrophe now. Then we will have several months to prepare better for the 2nd wave. We don't know how long immunity against the new CV will last. It's not clear that it will last more than several months, ie. it might be absent come the second wave.

They need to list what they class as underlying significant health issues that need to isolate for 12 weeks

It would not matter to some on here, they just want to put the headline on to be the first.
Remember them knobheads at school who always had the gossip and could not wait to spill it.

My University (York) have just announced that all teaching and all exams will move online for the remainder of the year (we have just finished term). Everything is up in limbo at the moment, as we have just come off the back of 4 weeks strike.

Is Goodricke College bar still the best place to drink on campus?
