COVID-19 — Coronavirus

the speed of new test kits and vaccines could give hope within next 12 weeks without taking draconian measures and ensuring everyone takes isolated measures.
...could give hope... and if it doesn't then not taking draconian measures will seem crazy.

I think if we start to pin our hopes on something such as that and ignore the coming tidal wave, we’re going to be left devastated.

Quite possibly.

Obviously I don't know the reasons why we are delaying a lockdown. Perhaps we are waiting to have a few more things in place such as more capability for ensuring delivery of supplies can meet the demand during a total lockdown, having a system in place as to how we are going to financially support the millions who wouldn't be able to earn a wage etc. Perhaps it's to try and keep a 'normalish' life/economy going for a long as possible in the hope that these medicines will ease the pressure. I have no idea but we aren't alone in delaying. Germany also hasn't gone into total lockdown and has restaurants open I believe (though they have imposed stricter measures than we have).

If it were down to me, we would have been in lockdown at least a week ago, but I'm not a scientist and don't have access to the data that they have. I can only assume that the scientists have provided information that suggests that now isn't the right time but I expect that time will come very soon though. Let's hope that they have got it right.

12 weeks to get over the peak suggests maybe 10-11 weeks of getting worse and then another 10, 11, 12 weeks on the down slope. Altogether maybe 5-6 months just to get to a point same as now.
China now over the peak but put tight controls in place early, 8 weeks of tight controls in Wuhan.
Italy looks like not yet at the peak.
Will be worth seeing the effect if controls start to be relaxed.
He is silly claiming 12 weeks, that went to pieces when questioned on it,they have judged it wrong so far, they say the virus is spreading quicker than they expected but he goes for a end date

I was certain that the over 70s lock down would have been in place by Wednesday.

Looking at ebay - and Amazon tonight, I think there is a real case for investigating them for facilitating & profiting from price gouging on toileteries.

Make sure to avoid checking it out if you wish to retain any faith in humanity.

We have children, parents and staff turning up to school tomorrow and we still haven't been told which children we can expect to be in school next week. We've drawn up 12 possibilities based on which professions may be classified as "key workers". It shouldn't be this hard.

Just watched a special report from Italy. They have more recorded deaths than wuhan. If bj thinks we can beat this in 12 weeks he is seriously deluded and needs to be sectioned to a mental hospital. The death rate in Italy continues to rise despite being in lockdown. So bj, when are we going to lockdown to try and stop us going down the same tragic path as Italy????? He needs to grow a set of baĺls and do it now!!!!!
It collapsed in China. Thing is they had one city to target. They also threw contact tracing at it as well as social distancing.

"Isolate, test, treat, trace", is the WHO dogma. Insgtead we isolate en masse. This is a massive use of resources at a massive social cost. It's very inefficient.

It’s one thing when you have anonymous shysters online exploiting people at a time of crisis, even worse when you have actual pharmacies pulling similar stunts.

Your missing a pivotal point.
Italy is the 2nd eldest population In the world.
And 99% of their cases have had underlying conditions which have led them to succumb.
I believe BJ is doing a good job and his estimations are correct based on his advisors guidance.
Lockdown wont happen in this country.

The missus follows loads of places on social media to get updates / offers etc

In the last half hour she's had e-mails off IKEA, Whitbread, Brewers Fayre and Table Table saying all their stores, shops and restaurants are closing either tomorrow or Saturday.....

Whilst it is and I'm not downplaying the COVID pandemic perhaps there is some comfort to be had by looking at the bigger picture. Remember that the current deaths because of COVID are only a tiny % of all deaths. Up to now (and that's a big caveat) this winter period has been one of the better ones in terms of mortality. (yes i can't believe I just wrote that either)

What the hope is is that this virus has shifted a percentage of deaths a small way forward. That is to say some people, who would have died in June for example, have died in February or March. As tragic as that is, it would give some cause for optimism.

Italy had 475 deaths from covid, today. If the virus had never showed up, they’d have had about 1600 deaths, the same as tomorrow and every day of 2020. The question is, did they have 2075 today and, if so, will they have less than 1600 a day for a few weeks/months once the virus is gone?

There was a bloke on the radio earlier this week saying his firm are fitting hand sanitisers and gels in care homes. The gloves they use were priced at £50, considerably up from the £6 the week before. Let’s hope all these bastards are completely isolated and socially distanced, by everyone, when this is over. Bankruptcy is too good for some people.

The didn't have one City, they had one province with a population of over 60 million.

Regardless of the age of Italy's population + we are further ahead than they are from 2 weeks ago. If you don't think the country or London will be in some sort of lockdown, you are in Dreamland.

Excellent post. The loudest voices, as usual, are the antis but I suspect loads of people out there share your view.

I'm glad someone recognizes there is far more to balance here, while at the same time juggling across a tightrope.

i for one welcome the approach, right or wrong, i see it better for us all and for society long term, than the extremities many are calling for.

Sure, it is a risk trusting the public to follow advice, and a gamble leaving them with choices to make. But the full lockdown martial law scenario that many are calling for is a terrible situation to be in, horrible for morale, stress and anxiety, not to mention the economy.

I have no intention of ignoring the advice, of course im disappointed that some/many will still go to pubs and places, but thats a choice they still have as grown up human beings, many likewise won't. People here calling for it all to be shut, but then talking abou having lots of friends over, like theres a fucking difference!

that time and those measures are ptobably coming, i am surprised to see how many are so eager for them. They wont be pleasant, nor short, this is a long haul, and i welcome the gradual loss of normality boris is trying to softly bring.
