My apologies if this has already been linked to. Why suppression now is essential.

It's a lengthy, sobering read but also highly informative.

It's an excellent article, and what's really really infuriating is that it is little more than common sense. You do not need a degree in stats or specialization in epidemiology to understand all of this.

"The lack of measures in the US and UK is in stark contrast, especially in the US. These countries are still not doing what allowed Singapore, South Korea or Taiwan to control the virus, despite their outbreaks growing exponentially. But it’s a matter of time. Either they have a massive epidemic, or they realize late their mistake, and have to overcompensate with a heavier Hammer. There is no escape from this.

But it’s doable. If an outbreak like South Korea’s can be controlled in weeks and without mandated social distancing, Western countries, which are already applying a heavy Hammer with strict social distancing measures, can definitely control the outbreak within weeks. It’s a matter of discipline, execution, and how much the population abides by the rules."

but are they?

people need to get out of the house and exercise or go for a walk. So long as they stay a sensible distance from others what is the issue.

so for example what is worse me my wife and my son who all live in the same house stay here and drive each other mad , or we go for a walk , the three of us around a field? What does it matter weare not meeting other people or touching other people . We are just people going for a walk on a nice day . If you keep a safe distance from other people you might see what is the issue?

I am going for a run later on my own, am I bellend . What harm am I doing anyone?

this could last many months , saying people cannot even go out of their house for months on end will cause all kinds of mental health issues. Keep your distance but get fresh air if you can.
That's wise and very true. I went out on my bike yesterday then realised that if I came a cropper I'd be using up vital ambulance/NHS staff etc, so have curtailed that and will now resort to running. Alone.

Aside from the fact that the mountain rescue and so on begged them not to.... How far are people travelling? It's not good to travel dozens, hundreds of miles for a bit of leisure. Car journeys = accidents = hospital beds.

People should definitely be walking and getting the daylight and fresh air mind you, IMO. Just do it locally, don't stand next to each other, don't mill around in groups.

I mostly agree but the fact is the summit was cramped and people were in very close contact, the thing I read on it.

yeah but we need to be careful just because someone or a couple or family have gone for a walk should not be seen as irresponsible. So long as they are not socially interacting with others , meeting friends etc there is no harm.

if you want to see cramped and close contact try a supermarket !!! We were much safer walking around a field on our own than going to the supermarket .

Some people are obviously getting it wrong but a lot of that is down to no concrete advice given specially the rules regarding fresh air etc, as mentioned there are some people who just don't care a jot it's those that we should focus on. I don't know if we can get a virus from joggers, what do we do if we have to share a communal garden or landing?

as gyms are shut I have to say running at the moment on my own I am finding very therapeutic.

Seven more people have died after after testing positive for coronavirus in Wales - taking the UK's total to 240.

It represents a marked increase in the number of Welsh fatalities, which now stand at 12.

An update on confirmed coronavirus cases and casualties across the UK is expected later.

The number of confirmed cases on Saturday stood at 5,018, a rise of 1,035 in 24 hours.

The chief medical officer for Wales Dr Frank Atherton, said: "It is with deep sadness I can confirm a further seven deaths of patients in Wales who tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19)

The government and health officials have also urged the 1.5 million people in England considered most at risk from COVID-19 - the disease caused by coronavirus - because of their health conditions to begin "shielding" themselves by staying at home.

Letters will go out this week "strongly advising" them not to go out for at least 12 weeks from Monday

Elsewhere, there has been criticism of people travelling to the countryside to avoid the outbreak.

There are concerns about an influx of people into rural communities, putting even greater pressure on local health and social care services.

You’re the same in this thread as any other. No matter what this government do you’d criticise. Just fucking leave it for a change. At least it’s not consistent Twitter posts though.
Correct. If ppl see everything thru a party political prism, their judgement becomes warped.

Totally agree on the woolly advice. I'm obviously out of touch, because I'd expect ANY UK govt to quickly produce simple guidelines and communicate them clearly through one page web adverts and so on. But at least 'most' people are taking responsibility.

yeah and just 20 minutes ago you are posting about having your daughter and grandkids coming around to visit you for the weekend and going out to your favourite Italian for a takeaway , but yeah you believe in lockdown.
Point taken - but getting one cook to come out from his kitchen with lasagne is a lot safer than going to Tesco and not finding lasagne or anything else on the shelf. The only real question is the risk that daughter (or us) is already incubating the disease. As others have pointed out, total elimination of risk is not going to be easy. As my wife is younger than me and volunteers for a charity which may have more work because of this, should I self-isolate from her for three months, or expect her to self-isolate with me?

If I'm desperate to go out, I'm sure I could drive to an isolated area near the coast and easily keep the 2 meter rule (preferably with an offshore wind), rather than going to well-known beauty spots.

The main dilemma will be whether to spend time on here, or start on the collected works of Dickens...

When will the letters go out?
Letters will go out this week "strongly advising" people not to go out for at least 12 weeks from Monday.

Why is it 1.5 million people and who are they?
Health officials believe this group is considered most at risk from COVID-19 because of their health conditions and will need to self-isolate for at least 12 weeks.

Why is it called shielding?
Shielding is a practice used to protect extremely vulnerable people from coming into contact with coronavirus. It is designed to ensure people who are clinically extremely vulnerable minimise all interaction between those who are extremely vulnerable and others.

I am afraid the experts who got this wrong were the scientists in the early days including the WHO. The global spread of this was aided by a complete lax response to air travel. It was in a very few countries and only a few cases but the advice from the experts was stopping global travel was not needed as cases were in one country and in another so therefore it is ok to travel between countries .

that proved to be bollox. Countries with heavy outbreaks early on should have been shut down and flights in and out stopped. The travel from regions with lots of cases such as Italy and Spain continued in this country unchecked and people globally were able to travel freely around the world spreading the virus from country to country .

the epicentre in Europe seemed to be Italy but until very recently travel in and out of Italy around Europe was perfectly permissible.

The response of our borders and airports has been nothing short of an absolute joke. People are moaning about people going for a walk today my mate flew back from Sri Lanka this week through Dubai. Lots of people on the plane coughing and spluttering and old people who had been stranded on cruise ships Around the world . Gets to Manchester airport not a single check, or question to any person coming in. All walked in .

I don't know if people have really thought about this, but if we (thought experiment only) locked every single person in the UK in their homes or in somewhere else where they could not spread infection, then in 2 or 3 weeks this virus would be GONE. Everyone infected would have either got better or died, and that would be the end of it. The UK would be virus-free and all we would have to do is strictly control visitors from abroad. Other than that, we'd be back to normal, no NHS overloading, no excess deaths, no ongoing isolation measures, sorted. If there''s 100k people infected today that would mean up to 250k people infected in their own homes and maybe 10k people dead. Finished, done, sorted.

Now remember I said "thought experiment" so clearly we cannot do this. But it illustrates the point. Clamp down *hard* and we get this under control quickly. Fanny about, allowing wankers to carry on without a care in the world, and let the crisis escalate in front of our eyes.
