COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Just had a meeting in work and we've been informed that if anyone receives a letter stating they are in a high risk category, and should self isolate for 12 weeks, then they have to use holidays as not eligible for company sick pay.

we have decided to call it at our house today?

I have had a scratchy throat for a couple of weeks, an irritant cough, but nothing persistent. No real temperature. Last two days my cough has become more regular and working hard to hack and clear my airways (without much luck) I also have a leaky nose. It's my eyes though, they feel really dry and stingy - is that even a symptom?

I have purposely stayed at home the majority of this time and stayed away from people, wife and kids have no symptoms. Just keep our distance from each other and enjoying the garden.

All of the above I would also get for allergies/hay fever but not sure if even the season for it?

I'm frustrated by this because feel strong. My little girl's birthday tomorrow. The plan is for me to sleep in my office and continue to work in there through the day, with the kids being home in their own rooms studying.

Apart from that, I do the 14-days - they do seven - we just retain two metre distance within our own home?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There's a NHS 111 web-site which takes you through a flow-chart of questions but I bet at the end it will just recommend you to do what you are doing.

My amateur advice would to be careful with sharing towels, bathroom, cutlery etc, and take care if symptoms move to your chest, and a fever builds. Then ring 111.

I had a cold 3-4 weeks ago, and it worried me a lot, and then disappeared. Best wishes.

The eyes is the thing niggling at me last few days, mine have been sleepy like, if that makes sense, no other symptoms as yet but worried their on the way.

Discussed with wife how we,ll do it if one of us comes down with it (gods knows what we do if we both get it with 3 young kids), strict isolation in bedroom for 14days and meticulous cleaning down of anything touched/used in bathroom is the plan.

Have read a few things this morning which indicate the virus can remain on a variety of surfaces for varying times up to a couple of days.

Other than that fingers crossed and hope for best :-) hope everything works out well for you all, take care

thanks mate - we also have two little kids, so we have to be realistic in terms of self isolating. We can all sleep apart and work apart - otherwise - a safe distance in the evening for TV or fresh air in garden.

thanks bud - we only have the one bathroom, so just need to make sure cleaning after every visit. No fever, but certainly a chesty feeling.

Time for a few emails to BBC/Daily Mail there, the Gov has already said they will cover 80% of peoples salary so there is very little need for companies to be dicks.

We have two weapons against the virus:
  • testing
  • isolation
it's not easy but it' obvious that we are not maximising either.

Germany are now testing 160,000 people a day. We're nowhere near that. We can't even test our own health workers who think they have it (I know this to be true). None-essential workers went off to work this morning making a mockery of the weekend's concerns about a few people gathering in the open air.

This government was initially prepared for 70% of us to slowly acquire immunity and then realised it just wasn't going to be possible to manage. That error left us with very little time to prepare but we are not doing everything possible are we? Have they really dropped their herd immunity plan? It is hard to accept that Western governments in the 21st century were prepared to do this, but our government still seems committed to aspects of this strategy. If you disagree, explain why we are not in lockdown now.

Why did many people have to go to work this morning when we know this will contribute to spread of the infection?

Where is the mass testing regime?

It is a lie to say the UK is not testing.
As Boris told us 50,000 were performed on the Wednesday, the latest data says we are performed 65,000 on Friday - that's 7,500 more per day day. Only Italy, Germany and Russia in Europe are performing more tests per day.
Well done to Norway though who for the size of their population are exceptional in testing.

With reference to Spain.

Lockdown in Spain started more or less 9 days ago.

At that time it's fair to assume that Madrid had very large numbers of infected people asymptomatic who then went home. Later a large number would have become ill maybe around last Wednesday, some of them seriously.
It's city of 6 million people. If only 5% of them were infected that's a large number.

I reckon this time next week we will have a clearer idea, as essentially the spread should have stopped due to lockdown.

Yep. They've also added:

If I personally go off showing symptoms then I'll be paid company sick pay.
If I go off because of a family member in the house is showing symptoms then no company sick pay.

To say I'm fuming is an understatement.

I got the eye thing. Apart from the cough and raised BP, my worst symptom.
Yep stay at home and keep your distance from others.

That much is a given mate. They estimated there were between 5,000 and 10,000 infected 10 days ago when the reported numbers were only 500. It would be logical to assume that the numbers today are 50,000 to 100,000 although frankly I would not be surprised if it was much higher than that.
The ratio between the reported number and the estimated infection number in your example is 100 - 200 times.
That being correct (and I don't disagree with it) the corresponding numbers as of yesterday would be 5683 reported infections and the estimated infection number would be 568,300 - 1,136,600.
