I’ll tell that to those who have lost loved ones elsewhere in the world, or those who’s businesses have gone under or those elderly people who have to further isolate themselves from the world and become more lonely.

I get it though Vic, you can’t criticise the Chinese government for literally lying about the virus and being the ones that have caused a pandemic but you can about the UK government of being slow and unclear once it’s arrived here.

it must be , it has to be much higher. You can’t have people warning just how contagious this disease is for months and doing illustrations showing how the disease spreads so quickly and fast due to its high contagious rate and for it not to be too widespread. Either it isn’t as Contagious as people claim hence why we have 8k confirmed cases or it is just as contagious as those showing the modelling have shown in which case it has to be 100’s of thousands if not millions.

this has been here since the start of the year (at the latest) and social distancing only came in a few weeks ago, until that point we were all mingling freely.

i recall the chief scientists in one of the early press conference saying when “ herd immunity” was not a taboo subject that he was working on the basis that for every confirmed death there would be a further 1000 cases . Showing it’s much more widespread , but also that the mortality rate is 0.1%
 
A friend of ours and her husband have caught it. They were in contact with someone two weeks ago, who tested positive this week, but it’s not clear if they definitely caught it from her.

We saw our friends almost two weeks ago, after she had seen this girl but currently have zero symptoms.

Do we self isolate?

If you get a new cough or high temp, if not no.

We all certainly hope so.

Everyone is learning and people's understanding are changing day by day. At the outset I was predicting 100,000 (in the UK) could die from this - based upon the belief that we were going to allow 40m to get infected. Thank God, it seems my prediction is probably wildly wrong (something I will delighted to eat humble pie over). And hopefully we can keep it well below 20,000 - which is still a terrible figure.

What frightens me most however is not the raw numbers, it's the circumstances of peoples' deaths. Yes, thousands die of flu every year, as they do from all sorts of other illnesses. But in the vast majority of cases, they die having received excellent care and in the end, sadly despite that, they pass away. This virus threatens a different scenario where people could be saved but we cannot save them because there is no capacity to treat them such is the surge in numbers. The idea of a 65 year old having their ventilator - the thing keeping them alive - taken off them to give to a younger person (something we are hearing has been happening in other countries) is really frightening.

just had a quick look out of my window in our quite little cull n sac, the self employed plumber has gone to work all week, the self employed builder has gone to work all week so far and the window cleaner has just turned up to do peoples windows. I think we are the only working house not to be working once we have finished 14 days isolation than 100% of our cull n sac will still be working !

I know its hard for self employed people

yet every day another company says they can make and supply ventilators from formula 1 teams to Gtec . I would like to see this great publicity being shown to be utilised on the frontline, that may calm people fears about ventilators

Yes. For 14 days from the time you met them.
 
Queen in good health

Buckingham Palace said the Queen is in good health after her son, Prince Charles, tested positive for COVID-19.

She has not been tested, the palace added


'Being close to others, in any situation, increases your risk'

Prof Fergusson told parliament: "All the evidence we have is being in close contact with people for extended periods of time increases your risk of getting infected.

"Whether it's at a football match or sitting next to people in the park.

"There's nothing intrinsically more dangerous being in a mass gathering than just being in public.

Imperial College disease modeller: Most people in the UK will NOT catch coronavirus

Prof Fergusson, whose team has been providing the government with scientific advice, said the ultimate goal was to not have the country on lockdown.

But he said: "We don't think most people will catch it. "The aim is to supress the spread until we have a vaccine

London was always going to be ahead of the rest of the country'

Prof Fergusson said: "We always predicted London would be ahead of the rest of the country because it is a hotspot for people coming into the country.

"But, there is transmission everywhere."

He also said there are areas around the country where hospitals and ICUS are being overwhelmed, while others are coping.

Imperial College disease modeller: The NHS can cope

Prof Fergusson told parliament today that on the bsis of the prime minister's announcements and the NHS doubling its ICU capacity estimates on 16 March, his team believes the NHS can cope with the number of people who will be infected.

"Some ICUs will get close to capacity but will not reach capacity nationwide," he said.

"Some areas of the country will be extremely stressed but we're reasonably confident we will be within capacity,


Imperial College professor, who has had coronavirus, talks to parliament

Professor Neil Fergusson, director of the MRC centre for global infectious disease analysis at Imperial College, is giving evidence to parliament's science and technology select committee.

He has had coronavirus and has recovered from it.

Prof Fergusson said: "It was like rather bad flu. A couple of days where it was particularly bad."

He is part of SAGE, the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies.

He told the committee scientists have agreed on key details but there are smaller details they disagree on.

Talking about a report from Oxford University that suggested half of the UK population may already be infected - he said SAGE has ruled out details from that report and it would not make a difference in the government's response
