Just watched Newsnight myself and all I saw was a really irate woman constantly asking a man questions, and interrupting after 3 words of his answer, asking questions like "what do you mean by that", then of course interrupting again before he has a chance to reply. Really poor interviewing. Your task as an interviewer is not to try to score smart arse points but to give the viewer information and insight. She failed miserably.

she did that because he chose to answer a question she hadn't asked.

Whilst talking about self-serving, let's see what a certain poster said about our NHS last year:
I'm prompted to ask this after my daring to question junior doctors in another thread, and the general outrage such comments cause. It wasn't particularly bad this time, but generally, if anyone makes any negative comments about the NHS, they are treated like they've fucked the pope.

What is it that causes such reaction? Is it because the NHS employs SO many people that nearly everyone has a family member or friend or neighbour who works for them?

Any suggestion that the NHS could be improved by some change or other, is pounced upon. And god help anyone who suggests - shock horror - maybe the private sector could do some of the work!?! You'd be rounded up and shot if some had their way.

If the service the NHS gave was amazing, it would be easier to understand. But the waiting times are terrible, the availability of leading edge treatments and facilities "patchy" to downright poor. And the clinical outcomes for things like cancer, woeful. In short, it's pretty poor to be honest.

People who work there are all "angels" or "heros" or whatever. Despite the fact they *chose* to go into the profession and they get paid for doing so. They weren't press-ganged into it. But dare to suggest that some nurses are lazy sods for whom picking up crap off the floor or doing some other actually important task, is beneath them.

You go up to the average nursing station on the average ward and 3 or 4 of them will blank you for 10 minutes. If any shop treated you like that, you'd walk out. But when the NHS does it, they are marvellous.

Why no such love-in for the chemical engineering industry? How about passionately sticking up for airport security staff who do such an amazing job preventing those nasty terrorists?

Nope, the NHS is rank average at best, and the sooner people can stop romanticising and face up to the fact, the sooner we can start thinking about how we can get a better health service for all of us.
A fan of Tim Martin are you? What a ridiculous post from you, you silly little man.

Just watching newsnight and they mention plans of setting up field hospitals in Manchester and Birmingham, maybe being announced tomorrow in readiness but who the feck are manning these hospitals????
The one in Birmingham will be at the NEC.
Who will man them? Existing staff from current hospitals with extras from the recalled army of medics and nurses. This recall army will also backfill the exting staff taken from current hospitals.

Don’t ever dare have a view contrary to popular opinion.

No-one could know that because no-one could hear his response.

if the question is " why has no-one got the right PPE" and he answers " I think the question is... " " or today we have mobilised the Army" his response isn't worth the hot air its carried on and she is justified in cutting him off. Politicians have got used to an easy ride with interviewers but this is different gravy and its answer the question ya cnut or fuck off.....

Pop along to your local hospital (or any hospital) and repeat what you said: People who work there are all "angels" or "heros" or whatever. Despite the fact they *chose* to go into the profession and they get paid for doing so. They weren't press-ganged into it. But dare to suggest that some nurses are lazy sods for whom picking up crap off the floor or doing some other actually important task, is beneath them.
Is that the sound of a cycle being peddled backwards I hear?

I agree.

I watched and cringed at his responses in the interview and said to the Mrs, it's like he thinks it's a general election campaign where bullshit and bluster are order of the day. Maitliss was asking pretty basic questions like "how many ventilators have we got?" and "these new ones - when are we getting them - will they be ready in time?"

Would have been nice to hear an answer instead of a twat in party political broadcast bullshit mode.

Tbf to @Chippy_boy when he wrote those posts we weren't in a national crisis, and even though I disagree with his opinions he had his reasons for saying them.
I'm sure in the current climate he's as grateful as everybody else for the work they have done, and continue to do in the face of risk to life on a daily basis.

Forgive me for wanting to hear the answers to the actual questions rather than making my mind up on his first 3 or 4 words. Or wanting to hear from the people actually in charge of the country rather than no nothing 'journalists' with a bee in their bonnet. There really is no point having anyone on the programme if you are not going to give them chance to even try to answer the questions. Very, very poor. Childish in fact. She could do a training video entitled "how to get absolutely nothing from your interviewee".

The bit about them not being angels and they chose it and get paid for it was way out of order, they and the ones returning to put their own lives at risk should speak for itself, most of that post was patronising bollocks, for nurses, drs and the others it is a vocation not a job

What's "in time " ? In time to save 500 lives, 1000, 10,000 ? Nonsensical question

I’m also sure we’ll see the benefits of having a state owned and operated healthcare system, however imperfect, when comparing it to one that is palpably not, in the next few weeks.

ah -but have you revised your view on the NHS?
Not really no. It has its merits such as being universally available and cheap. But it's not particularly good by comparison with our peer countries and I'd like to see it improved. It is not particularly inspiring to me to discover that we have significantly worse ICU capacity than Italy for example, and dramatically worse than Germany. Is it to you?

That is not to say I am ungrateful to the people who work in it nor that they are not doing their utmost in extremely difficult circumstances at the moment.

Watching with horror at what's going on in America. Trump is a car crash. He's fucking terrifying and he's going to cast so many lives.

:(

What about the American model? How do you think that’s going to fare in the next few weeks?
