COVID-19 — Coronavirus

At the US press conference last light it was revealed that the US doesn't have a reliable antibody test yet. An unreliable test is worse than no test at all because bad data = bad decision. If 50% of your population have antibodies and you test with an inaccurate test, lets say in simple terms it's 80% reliable. Your results are only 40% accurate. More wrong than right. So you make the wrong policy decision.
Is that this "new math" they are talking about?

And regarding the goods, first of all the government has said there's no evidence of people cstching COVID-19 through the post. But even if there is, it must be a very low chance. The virus does not survive well on surfaces like cardboard especially in warm weather. And the it depends how careful you are handling things. Leave them in the hall for a few days and even the packaging will be virus free..
Not much point purchasing perishable goods if you're leaving them in the hall for a few days is there ?

I'm happy with what I'm doing to have minimum risk, but I see others taking no precautions, and as for "leaving things outside" by the courier, fine if you have a front door to the outside and somewhere to leave them, but not so great if you live in apartment block several floors away from the door. Also some are still insisting you sign for goods watching from above, and as for take away drivers, many are taking no precautions at all, and these are visiting multiple people per day all who might have the virus, so could pass it from one household to another.

Like I said perfectly happy with what I'm doing, but observing others, the so called "social distancing" is not anywhere near as secure as it could be, and there are are companies and individuals who don't give a toss frankly.

Interesting:

He’ll be criticised no matter what he does but his point about using the right amounts of PPE in the right situations is a fair one. There’s a global shortage of the stuff, so it quite crucial to bear in mind the guidelines on when and how to use it. He’s also right to say that it’s impossible to criticise people for using it too quickly as they are of course worried/scared. But it’s part of his job to make sure our PPE supplies have the biggest impact on the nation’s safety that they possibly can, so he has to remind those using it to use it wisely. It’s a tough situation, but there’s nothing wrong with him saying what he did. Those criticising need to realise there aren’t PPE trees that we can just pluck the equipment from.

A good picture of Spain's epidemic coming under control undistorted by changes in testing rates.

No manipulation.
They publish the numbers as they are at a fixed time each day. "here are all the new records of death". Then they sort them out as to which day the death actually occurred. It's a function of the delay is the reporting system and i don't blame anyone for that. If you've ever been in a tactical control centre you will see the "fog of war" as individual reports come in followed by investigation then hours or days later confirmation. It's not instant but eventually it's accurate.
Im starting tp take the hump about at all these people who are convinced figures are being manipulated or massaged. We all know the death figure is hugely higher than can be accounted for but why test people who ha e died at home when they had been displaying symptoms or were in the at risk category and were self isolating. The guidance is the same, the outcome is the same, there is no earthly point in wasting resources and time and money testing those poor souls who have gone. It wont change what the response will be, stay at home and away from others. Field hospitals being built at god knows what cost, the govt paying people's wages for goodness sake, all kinds of measures. We know what we are dealing with and so there is no need to manipulate figures.

To keep civil servants busy whilst working from home would be my guess

I’m just drinking tap water. I haven’t bought a pint of milk since we went into lockdown. Mainly because it’s perishable fairly quickly and I don’t want to go out shopping too frequently since the message is “Stay At Home” (I’m aiming to just go shopping once every two weeks, so far that’s working out about right and I’m due my next shop in payday on Wednesday).

And for those not doing what I am and still buying milk for brews; compared to coffee shops who use milk as their main liquid in their drinks, at home we use a drop of milk and it’s water we use as the main liquid. A latte or a mocha from a coffee shop have no water in them.

Cravendale, mate. Look it up.

That's the milk we have been buying - four pinter lasts seven days once opened or three weeks not.

Kids need their cereal every day and only need to pick up two bottles to ensure all those unnecessary trips you rightly state.

@Nellies left peg @tolmie's hairdoo

You can freeze milk you know... provided you have the freezer space!

I know mate, but can't fit it past the fish fingers and Chicago Town pizzas.

It also turns a funny yellowish colour when you freeze milk.

Up until this crisis, we hardly ever used the freezer, certainly not meat, which becomes utterly flavourless when it goes in there.

My kids were always bought the best burgers from fresh at the butchers, so a bit miffed they seem to love Birds Eye's 'beefburgers'

I had carnation milk with tinned peaches the other day and my two took one look and ran out of the room.

Fucking spoiled 'em.
