Just read that wearing a face mask to stop the virus is about effective as trying contain a fart in your under pants...
They’re good for stopping you breathing the virus out to others but don’t stop you contracting it because you can get it through the eyes (and ears, or have I made that one up?).

South Korea have used Facemasks as a part of their culture since the SARS outbreak so it must be of some use. You see them at City games with them on (we get a lot of Koreans at the Etihad).

one guy in the asda que had made a hole in his mask so he could smoke with it on and blow smoke out via his uncovered nose

I am afraid more than anything else this virus has exposed what a huge amount of the population are extremely thick to the point I fear for the future of the planet more than before.

Greed and selfishness has also been spectacularly exposed as rife too.

The ones I use for dusty DIY work like when doing sanding down, cutting tiles etc, I used to get from Screwfix when they were like a quid each or something (and they are proper N95 masks). I'm guessing they are rather more difficult to find now!

This does seem to be the main problem with enforcing usage of them - there are a few chemists around, but I doubt their stock stays in for long

Bit of light relief for those who have kids....

My 11 year old girl is not a happy bunny at the moment :)

Doomsburg will run with that during her next breeding question slot, saying; “children missing 50 days of school? does that mean schools will re-open on 15th June?”

as bad as they can be, they are not draconian like China and will not shut down mainstream media who report the death toll.

I don't think anyone will be seriously looking at authoritarian states like China as a serious numbers comparison though.

We will probably look to our European counterparts and there's nothing to suggest they're more likely to lie about numbers than our own government (which already has form for manipulating the truth within the context of this pandemic)

they never imposed any lockdown like we did , it was guidance given from the govt (like boris originally gave for the first week) To use social distancing , wash hands etc. Use common sense.

South Koreans though complied.

Cultural differences mean a lot here too, the public there are used to social distancing and masks etc already.

Personally I think the huge level of benefit of universal mask wearing in public places is grossly misunderstood by our academics.

If you imagine that in the vast majority of cases, it is mucus droplets which spread the infection (rather than airborne aerosol virus) then if everyone wears a mask in public, no surfaces get contaminated, no mucus gets inhaled, no-one catches it. Full stop.

The difference in spread and in death rates between mask-wearing and non-mask-wearing countries is so stark and impossible to ignore, and yet the brilliant scientists have their head up their arses, waffling on about the dangers of improperly fitted masks and of touching your face more. Whereas the empirical evidence that mask-wearing works, is staring them in the face.
Here in badly hit Spain in our township virtually all out and about wear masks, not they say for their own protection but to indicate to others our desire to keep the CV and other germs away from those we get close to.
Wear a mask, it may not be 100 percent the answer but it is certainly part of the solution.

I'm convinced the only reason our government isn't fully supportive of it is because if the public en masse try to buy masks it will make it even more difficult to get them for NHS and other key workers.

If we had a huge OVER supply of face masks, are we honestly to believe that the government would be recommending to the public NOT to wear them? That seems inconceivable, doesn't it.

council tax payment deferal,,all councils doning theis now if you havnt the funds this month,,anyone done it? or know how it works?,i asume in say 3 months or so there going to be looking for double payment to catch up which would be tough

My local council sent out new statements, instead of Feb and March next year being the "free" months for DD, it's April and May this year. There's also a separate Council tax support scheme that you can apply for but the online form runs to 30-odd pages!

How convenient. I don't know because the government has suppressed the information.

Having to get it from Turkey sounds exactly like scrabbling around if UK firms are trying to supply it and no-one's replying.
Well maybe. I suspect you being an fervent lefty who never has a good word to say about the government may figure in your thinking however.

They could announce a year of Christmasses and you'd find something to moan about.

Ha yep. I knew there were a lot of idiots around, but I didn't realise quite how many there are. I'm seeing people who I thought were intelligent do incredibly selfish and idiotic things. I'm convinced people are actually getting more and more stupid now, and we're going backwards generally speaking. I think the gap between the extremely intelligent and the average person is widening every day. The brightest brains are pushing on, whereas lots of us are just melting into our chairs and not thinking about anything, ever. I reckon years of inane mainstream culture glorifying pretty, but stupid and vacuous, people on the likes of Love Island/The Only Way Is Essex, the internet, shortening attention spans due to social media and the dumbing down of political debate to nothing but ad hominen attacks and catchphrases has made vast parts of society increasingly stupid.

An urgent appeal has been issued for volunteers to take part in human trials of a potential coronavirus vaccine - with those who take part offered up to £625
Volunteers must be aged 18 to 55 and in "good health", the University of Oxford says

Get on it,be part of history
You should give it a go Karen. Surely they need to test people who are known to have had it as well... just to make sure it doesn't kill them or anything inconvenient, like.
