Ha i think that everyday, there is usually a person in there that old who was fit and healthy, amazing really

Whilst all deaths are absolutely tragic, I always despair when I see those of the younger age range with no known underlying conditions. I'd guess the majority of those could perhaps have lifestyle issues which places them in a more vulnerable category even if they don't have any diagnosed conditions. I might be well off the mark, and it's not a nice subject to speculate on, and it certainly doesn't make their premature death any less tragic than someone fit and healthy in their prime.

This graph surely can't be right, can it? I've been critical of the Gov't (without getting into politics here) but even I'm surprised at that.

I know what you mean,to start with it was over eighties in ill health and then dropped down in age but In sick people, then gradually the younger fit people came into the numbers more, tragic for every single family

The Financial Times go into this in quite a bit of detail. The FT is usually behind a paywall but CV-19 coverage is free-to-read

well according to our news we in the UK are the only ones who are having PPE issues and other countries are often held up as having no issues whatsoever with hospitals , death rates, or PPE , like errrm Germany.

at times you would think the Covid pandemic affects only the UK and that only we , nobody else is in the world , is seeking PPE at the same time as us, like for example the Germans.

you would also think it is something that happens each year for the last 30 years and so why wouldn’t we have all this in stock ?

what is particularly weird is everything is flipping on its head, the guardian run that story which probably helped the government whereas the telegraph and piers Morgan are slamming the government daily.

Worlds gone bonkers.
Ok, so I kind of disagree with some of that. Most European countries are being effected, we seem on a similar trajectory to Italy and Spain. Other European countries seem to be coping better than others, the Scandinavians, Germany has tested more thoroughly than us and seems to have reduced its death rate as a result. I think the mainstream press has covered that well enough that you get an accurate enough picture. They are also pretty loud in lauding Oz and NZ whilst getting stuck into USA. So I do think the global picture is being covered well enough and our shortcomings round PPE and testing have been pretty well exercised. Isn’t that how it should be mate?
We have a pandemic plan in the U.K. which is supposed to be tested every couple of years. It was last in 2016 (I think) when we were shown to be unprepared for a pandemic, particularly around PPE. And yes there should be a stock of equipment ready, waiting and current as part of a pandemic plan so we are not caught short. Unfortunately much of that stock was out of date and was not replaced.
If the Government had moved faster in January and February it still shouldn’t have been a disaster. We still have U.K. manufacturers producing PPE and shipping it abroad to the USA because we were slow in mobilisation.
Where I completely agree with you is that the world has gone completely bonkers. Trump, Johnson as a 10 bob Churchill Toby jug, all surface and zero substance. If I wasn’t an eternal optimist...I would say we are well and truly fucked.

Seen this going round on twitter, there seems to be discussions about the z score and how it’s being used.

Tbf I’ve never heard of it before so I can’t add much.

Copied this from someone who seems to know more..

‘You have to be careful with Z-scores because they are a measure of the number of standard deviations from the mean, not an absolute or percentage variation from the mean.
Therefore if a country has a steadier rate of mortality usually, then the same absolute variation would lead to a much higher Z-score.
My understanding is that Italy & Spain have higher standard variations as they are more affected by heatwaves and cold-snaps than the UK. Therefore they would have a lower Z score with the same variation.
EURMOMO don't publish the actual numbers by country so it is difficult to see what is driving the Z score.

To illustrate this point the Z-score for the whole of Europe (or the EURMOMO members at least) was 54 in week 14, but the highest Z-score for an individual country that week was England with 35.’

I’m still struggling tbf.

So we are at about 25,000 deaths ?? ( care homes and outside includes) - it’s probably more then that.

depressing. That week in the middle of April was one of the deadliest in our history

It's not that they did anything different. It's just peaking at different times. Because the population of London is so much larger it tends to drive the overall values.
I can't remember where I saw it but the North West was expected to peak in May.

So you don't understand the latest figures, too much Guinness my friend.
I understand the figures perfectly.A pity you`re the one who doesn`t understand how they work.Don`t bother replying as I can`t be arsed getting into a debate with you.Others have also told you,you are wrong so stop digging or wumming.

Well yeah - going to guess the reason they lived to 99 in the first place is because they had no underlying health conditions.
They must have had some sort of anxiety-led underlying condition. Either that Covid would kill them, or that they wouldn't get a card off the Queen.
