That would be me and ISTAT (Italy's ONS) did post massive 11,600 excess death numbers for MARCH - (in addition to the 13,710 already posted an increase of 84% on recorded figures) you have to wait till June to see the numbers for April!
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-05...toll-much-higher-than-reported-istat/12214396

Note: All UK figures are accurate up to the 24th April.

BTW all deaths are a tragedy but you have to compare apples with apples. It would seem all excess deaths are the only accurate comparison that can be made.
Okay, but I was referring to the specific claim that you made that the UK won't overtake Italy because they'll post huge numbers on the 5th May. They didn't and we did. Obviously like any pandemic, we're not likely to know the true death toll under quite a while after the event. But it's also worth mentioning that given we got to watch them go through it first, and the fact that they've got a much higher elderly population than us, we should be doing much better than them.

Recently I posted about my daughter, nurse etc and wanting to see her fella. I gauged opinion on here and refused to let her see him.

last night after a 12 hour shift she’s sat watching tv with me, up pops professor fuckwit Ferguson and his story.

My daughter rises up and says to me, “their taking the piss dad, I’m getting ready and going”.
I was just about to say, no chance, be responsible etc but she gave me a look of don’t go there and I knew right there and then, professor fuckwit had at least, took the piss out of one hard working young nurse who’s sacrificed much recently.

cheers

Would you have been just as surprised if it was a Labour government in charge or a Lib Dem or a more nobler Greener front, now would you ? Fact of the matter is this scenario was an unknown entity from the outset and all the governmental parties could do was to take heed from the experts to hand who quite frankly were not experts as the whole scenario was ? "unknown". Hindsight is a wonderful thing and yes the government initially fooked up but so would have all the other democratic parties and so has all of Europe and so has the Americas and the rest of the known world. Instead of chastisement maybe just maybe this is a time to come together as one single entity in an effort to defeat this behemoth of a virus. Finger pointing is a very easy thing to do in the aftermath.
It's taken three months to adopt WHO advice on testing and tracing. The "rest of the known world"? South Korea is "unknown"? It's that colonial attitude that means we didn't learn from Asian countries who were taking it seriously.

The UK Government, the "Leaders" and Establishment have totally failed the UK people at every single level you can imagine - ignoring the science, lacked of planning, indecision and confused mixed messages, not having a testing program in place or even following WHO guidelines, NHS resource cuts over many years, care homes built and run for profit and milking the old ,forcing them to sell their homes - where did the profits go?, the lack of basic PPE, a soft lockdown that came too late and a UK totally out of step with other countries as still allowed sport to go on (Cheltham, Rugby, Football......???) - a level of apathy and exceptionalism in the UK towards COVID 19 that is criminal - They cannot even protect themselves nevermind the public - they have failed the primary goal of a government that is to protect its people (not try to spin the truth).

The UK had major advantages others can ony dream of, a rich developed country, a fucking small island, it also had the NHS - YET the leaders and establishment fucked it all up - borders open to al,airports still open and the highest death toll in Europe and 2nd in world. They still fail to make a decision (actually playing football is still being discussed? WTF?) - I hope I am wrong but a 2nd covid wave in the UK is coming. The current "lockdown" that some people want to end has not gone far enough - itis not really a lockdown - just look at the cars, roads, airports, shops, parks.....then look at those other countries who have manged the crisis better, with fewer resources and had fewer deaths.

An 'economic tsunami' is on its way that will change societyfor years - the austerity years will bein its shadow. But what of the elite, the wealthy, the billionares who have gorged on the UK 's resources - Will they be safe on their islands and yachts and protected by tax havens?

I just hope the "war crimes" committed in these months on the UK people will come up for judgement by future generations who have been failed.

My partner works for the NHS, in hospital everyday - hopefully in the enquiry that will follow we will hear the words of those who fought the battle at the front line. The truth cannot be buried with the dead. I hope their words will not be silenced by the so called generals who stood on the hills waiting, watching and making fucking decisions that cost the lives of many.

You’re wasting your time mate trying to get through to the in hindsight brigade. No matter how much you point out that so many mistakes were obvious at the time they won’t accept it.

Coincidentally it was a great time for this story to break about the turd who’s broke the rules to go and have sex with his mistress. Front page headlines over the fact we now have the worst death toll in Europe. North Korea watch and learn!

No. Not all Govts fucked up. And you didn’t need hindsight. You just needed the sense to look at countries who were already exposed to the virus and take lessons from what they were doing or not doing. The UK was not the first country to be exposed to the virus. We were not even the first country in Europe to be exposed to the virus. Did we take lessons from other countries? No we decided there was nothing we could learn and trumpted instead ‘that we knew best’. British exceptionalism at its finest and it killed people.

This type of attitude was fully expressed during the whole Brexit farago so I suppose we shouldn't be surprised.
However it doesn't bode well for our post covid future.

Spot-on. Dominic Rabb is hiding behind the figures. We are expected to believe that virtually everyone else in the world has undervalued the death stats apart from the UK. We were told for weeks that Italy had an ageing population and London had a young profile. Now they are saying London is "an international city" with a very dense population (as if that's a positive) but Germany has huge metro areas around Hamburg (5m), Dusseldorf (5.2m), and Berlin (4.5m). Then you have Greece with apparently one of the oldest and poorest populations (and a bankrupt public sector) plus thousands of displaced refugees. And Greece has had 146 deaths according to the WHO.
It's all bollocks. Do they really think the British public is stupid?

Yep it’s disappointing that our pandemic response seems to have more in common with North Korea than South.

I think the ONS data that was subsequently released showed we actually had over 800 (all settings) deaths at the time of 'lockdown'. So one of the worst hit countries in the world before 'lockdown' and even then, we still had open borders and mass gatherings on flights.
We still have open borders now without screening ! Something I just can't understand if I'm honest.

The Govt is clueless on Brexit. It’s still in denial over the Withdrawal Agreement and the NI protocols. It has no idea why we won’t be treated like Canada, it’s blithely talking about training 50,000 new custom agents which is more than the EU, it’s trying to do a trade deal with the US in the middle of a fucking pandemic and it’s ‘plan’ to phase us out of lockdown will be riddled with the same incompetence they showed prior to taking us into lockdown.

The media in Europe is painting as the ‘idiots of Europe’ over our handling of pandemic. The fact the UK papers are leading with ‘Professor Shagalot’ tells you everything about the Govts handling of the situation.

Clearly our figures are terrible, but if you are going to compare countries surely you need to compare apples with apples? When the dust has settled then a proper enquiry should be held into the governments handling of the crisis imo. Nothing less.
