COVID-19 — Coronavirus

I'm struggling to see any way in which UK death numbers won't be significantly larger than present.
They will, undoubtedly go higher, but a decision has been made by government that it’s an acceptable risk in order to get the economy moving.

they will ramp the propaganda up a fair bit in the next few weeks.

it will be most people have mild symptoms, a lot won’t even know they even have it , mortality rate by age and where the virus really attacks. Social distancing is the most important thing and wash your hands.

it’s going to be a bit different to the last few weeks.

Which is ironic given how badly ill Johnson was with it, despite not having any underlying health conditions (that we are aware of).

Of course lockdown can't continue forever but the numbers are still alarmingly high. My concern is that the government are seeing other nations coming out of lockdown and the motivation now is not to fall behind them economically, which is an understandable concern but it should not be at the expense of people's health.

Talk of re-opening beer gardens seems a classic deflection technique. If the proles can go to the pub they can also go back to work.

Ireland's measures for coming out of lockdown has the health and safety of the public very much at the forefront. It will be interesting to see how ours compare.

This.

We're a few weeks behind other countries who are fortunate enough to be in a position to begin easing their lockdowns as the numbers are a bit better (and I use that term loosely). We've seen that but instead of owning up to our initial failings and learning from it, we've immediately decided they can't be out there having fun when we're not allowed so we're just gonna go for it again anyway, to hell with the science.

Unless I'm missing something the virus hasn't gone away, we have no cure or vaccine, so as soon as people start mixing more then it will spread again and deaths will rise sharply.

I'm guessing Sweden who have remained almost fully open throughout should give an indication how it might go.

Wow. That really is incredible. What a ridiculous front page. No surprise as it’s such a wank paper but I can’t get my head around something like that.

Jesus wept. It's like no one cares that thousands and thousands and thousands of people are dead or that thousands more are going to die!

p.s. Like the 'hurrah for the blackshirts!' page further down on the tweet. That paper has got real history.

its pretty obvious whats going to happen when the restrictions are eased - cases will sky rocket

Guaranteed. We'll do hardly anything tactile and just 'ask' people to act differently, with little to no enforcement of any of it. Contact tracing will likely be a sham, businesses won't properly change their way of working, and if they do, it won't last, there will be pictures of crowded tubes immediately etc etc.

Johnson delaying his announcement to Sunday doesnt really have much impact when it's already been leaked to the press in advance of Bank Holiday weekend, the idiots who have been flaunting social distancing are going to be out in force over the next few days

There will be at least 3 more weeks of lockdown. Some restrictions will be eased, but the new case numbers are just too high to risk too much.
The government will; however tell us how we're going to get out of it.
It will take 3 weeks to get public transport fit for purpose for a start.
- Protective gear for staff.
- Temperature checks at stations.
- Rejigging major stations for one way walking.
- Sourcing zillions of gallonscof hand sanitizer.
- The provision of face masks.
- Sterilisation of buses, trains, tube, trams, concouses, lobbies and lifts.

Agreed, think people are getting way too carried away in here.

I agree with this.
At the start Johnson said 12 weeks.
He came out of hospital and reiterated 12 weeks.
There’s still 5 weeks to go.
I think there will be some vacuous announcement on Sunday like you can exercise twice a day but otherwise it’ll be more of the same.

Have to say, the front pages of the papers are an utter disgrace

I agree. I suspect we’re going to hear more about how much debt we’re going to be saddled with, how many millions of people are going to lose their jobs, the size of the recession that’s coming, what this all means for the public finances and paying for our public services going forward, and importantly, some modelling showing how many people are going to die due to the recession, mental health issues and medical interventions for non Covid issues that have been put back due to the lockdown.

600 + deaths reported yesterday and was it 6,000 new cases??

Why are we considering, basically ending lockdown with these numbers. The media are in overdrive to get everything back to normal and ignore what’s going on

Can see it’s all started now. You’ve got the papers declaring the lock down soon to end without any official announcement, you’ve got the online twats like Katie Hopkins riling up the idiot masses saying this is a “free country” and we should not “cower in fear” as if the whole thing has been a big hoax.

All of that and add a sunny bank holiday and people will be out and about like it never happened. Come July time we will have a second peak and thousands more needless deaths.

Does anyone actually believe any Headline in the gutter press. Unfortunately yes!
Those headlines will be read at a glance by, say, two million people, and that’s all they need to think; “right back to normal”... and they’ll all be surprised when their mother uncle and grandad die in July when we’re seeing 2500 deaths a day!
